Pope
Copeland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's extra bullets in the shed, next to the gasoline
They'll take us when we're dead, I see them when I dream, I know, I
And though I never belonged on this pebble where I stand
Heaven knows what I, Heaven knows what I am
I

Would you be my love
Until I can prove that this world is not real?
This world is not real
This world is not real

But it's getting dark, I can feel it
Still your body curves, it bends like time
And your soul gleams, like I should steal it
Keep it safe at my side, 'til it's time, it's time
When fear has taken us
And heaven knows what comes
Heaven knows what comes next
I

Would you be my love
Until I can prove that this world is not real?
This world is not real
This world is not real

Hey, hey, are you awake?
You should probably get up and get going
I don't want to be rushed

Would you be my love
Until I can prove that this world is not real? (Be my love)
This world is not real (Be my love)
This world is not real

(I) This world is not real
(I) This world is not real
(I) This world is not real (Not, not, not real)
This world is not real
This world is not real (Not, not, not real)

Did you dream about anything last night?
Did you dream about anything?
We should probably get up and get going soon
What did you dream?

I don't wanna be rushed
Did you dream about anything?

Overall Meaning

The song Pope by Copeland is a dreamy, melancholic ballad that explores the themes of mortality, nihilism, and love. The opening verse talks about the extra bullets in the shed and the inevitability of death. The singer sees these bullets in his dreams and accepts the harsh reality of life that everything is temporary and futile. He then reflects on his place in the world and questions his existence, feeling like he never belonged on this "pebble where I stand". The refrain uses the phrase "Heaven knows what I am" to express the uncertainty and ambiguity of his identity and purpose.

The chorus presents a request to the listener to be his love and stay with him until he can prove that this world is not real. The singer seems to be looking for comfort and connection in a world that he perceives as fleeting and meaningless. He perceives his lover's body and soul as sources of beauty and light that he wants to hold onto until "fear has taken us". The sense of impending doom is palpable as the singer realizes that death is certain and unknown.

The song ends with a conversation between the singer and his lover that is both mundane and profound. They talk about their dreams, which can be interpreted as both literal and metaphorical. The question of what happens after death is still unresolved, and the uncertainty lingers. Overall, Pope is a poetic and introspective piece of music that captures the human condition in a delicate and poignant way.

It bothers me that Copeland is not the most famous band in the world.

I love Aaron Marsh so much.

Joel Heslop

I get so pumped when you mention Copeland on Stream. You also mentioned an EDM crossover with vocals from Aaron Marsh: I'M IN FOR THAT.

Jared Marshall

Aaron Marsh needs to collaborate with Randy Marsh. Would take some real tegrity to get done but by golly it would be good.

Yessss. They're still killing it 10 years after You Are My Sunshine (the quintessential, perfect Copeland album in my opinion). I have been in love with Aaron Marsh's flawless production skills since I was 15 (I'm 27 now). Good stuff!!!

Same here, man! I’m 29 now and have been listening to them since I was 16. This song is just incredible.

Just saw them in Orlando tonight. Long time fan since the first album but never heard this song. I feel stupid for not keeping up with them. This song proves they have a higher level grasp of songwriting most artists never achieve. What an underrated band. Makes me wanna cry.

Copeland is one of those weird bands that I’m obsessed with but I only prefer to hear them live. They bring way more passion and intensity than you could ever hear from their recordings. Please come to Paris!!
