Bleeding Rivers
Copper Wimmin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Many a time before
Your heart bleeds rivers
Deep enough to drown
To swim against the current
Swim against the force
The force that pulls one down
But no matter how hard I try
I can't seem to win this fight
I seem to be further behind
Than I was when I met you
I know that you'll choose
Where you want to be
Choose the heart gold
And not the one for free
Choose the heart of the past
Belonging not to me
But no matter how hard I try
I can't seem to win this fight
I seem to be further behind
Than I was when I met you
No matter how hard I try
I can't seem to win this fight
I seem to be further behind
Than I was when I met you
The lyrics of Copper Wimmin's song Bleeding Rivers seem to speak to the struggle of loving someone who has been hurt in the past and has built up walls to protect themselves from further pain. The singer acknowledges that the person they are in love with has suffered deeply, their heart bleeding rivers that run deep enough to drown. The singer had hoped to be the one who could swim against the current and the force that pulls one down, but despite their best efforts, they seem to be losing the battle.
The singer understands that ultimately, the person they love will choose where they want to be and who they want to be with. They hope that the person will choose the heart of gold and not the one that is free or belongs to the past. The singer seems to accept that no matter how hard they try, they cannot seem to win this fight and are falling further and further behind.
Overall, the lyrics of Bleeding Rivers are a poignant and emotional portrayal of the complexities of love, especially when it involves someone who has experienced trauma and hurt in the past. The song captures the conflict between the desire to love and protect someone and the reality of not always being able to save them from their pain.

I just watched season 3, episode 9 of The L Word and honestly it's such a heartbreaking, emotional show and the acting is 10/10, the music is amazing, and this song is so beautifully depressing...

That's why I searched for this song too, because I saw the l word. Also how I found "Into my arms" with Nick Cave because it's in the 1st season :)

Guys, this song was about all of them: Bette and Tina (first of all), Shane and Carmen, not only Dana.
Beautiful voices, affecting lyrics!

Completely exquisite song. I cannot stop listening to it. I know of the reference to The L Word and it did create an appropriate feel to the scene it was used in.

Can I just say...I've noticed I love the music from a lot of showtime shows. Oh my gosh, the QAF, Weeds, and L Word soundtracks are all so fantastic. I think I love them so much because the music is all so perfect for each show. They focus on creating a mood for their show that you get lost in their world. Yet also builds an emotional connection. I like that in a show. It helps transport you into that environment and get lost in their world as a fly on the wall.

It was the scene at the end of episode 9 in season 3 where Bette calls home at the meditation retreat.
