You Go To My Head
Count Basie & Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You go to my head and you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning 'round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne

You go to my head like a sip of sparkling Burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two
The thrill of the thought that
You might give a thought to my plea
Cast a spell over me

Still, I say to myself
Get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be?

You go to my head with a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julies
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes

Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance

You go to my head
You go to

Overall Meaning

my head and make me feel like I'm under your spell. The song "You Go to My Head" by Count Basie & Sarah Vaughan talks about the impact someone has on the singer's life. The first verse talks about how this person lingers in their thoughts like a haunting refrain. The comparison to bubbles in champagne paints the picture of how much this person's presence is felt. In the second verse, the singer describes their relationship with this person like a sip of sparkling Burgundy brew, and much like the fizz, their thoughts about the person are intense and all-encompassing. Despite knowing that this person might never feel the same way, they can't help but feel under their spell.

The charm of this song lies not only in the lyrics but also in the way they are delivered by the singers. Vaughan's soulful voice and Basie's piano skills perfectly complement each other. The chorus is simple yet impactful, and the juxtaposition of the singer's conflicting emotions of being drawn towards this person but also trying to be practical resonates with the listener. The song's overall theme of infatuation and unrequited love is something that most people can relate to, making it a timeless classic.

I love this song and I especially like this version by Sarah. I have always felt that Sarah didn't get the acclaim she deserved during her career. I believe that she is one of the top Jazz singers of all time. Thanks for posting this recording.

You are completely mistaken. Sarah Vaughan is universally considered to be one of greatest jazz singers of all time. In fact, one of the greatest voices period. Leonard Bernstein once said she could have been a great opera singer had she taken that route. Virtually every post on the songs of any female singers singing jazz references her. She was and is legendary. This is not her best song either. Not even close.

Truth. She gets left behind in the (deserved) afterglow of Ella and Billie, but in my opinion she's just as good. If not better. And a great deal less mannered.
