He was Jamaica's biggest golden age mento star, full of talent and charisma. His popularity was only rivaled by the cross-over fame of Lord Flea. Lasher was also one of mento's most prolific artists, recording at least 50 tracks right through the first part of the 1970s, by which time he had moved from various mento sounds to a brief dalliance with ska and then into reggae.
For all the many singles he recorded, Lasher has never released a CD or LP. And although a handful of his tracks are available today, considering his stature, Count Lasher may be the single most neglected artist in the history of Jamaican recorded music. Count Lasher died in 1977 at the age of 51.

Perseverance
Count Lasher Lyrics

Get set we're going to leave
And the ground beneath us is rocky
But perseverance will make it easy
Digger, digger waterboy
Don't stop till you reach the water
Digger, digger waterboy
We have reassurance
All we need now is endurance
Let's toil to a finish
It is hard but we will accomplish
Digger, digger waterboy
Don't stop till you reach the water
Digger, digger waterboy
Perseverance will make you conquer
Don't wait for tomorrow
Work today we will end the sorrow
Our brows maybe sweating
But bread will come if we do our duty
Digger, digger waterboy
Don't stop till you reach the water
Digger, digger waterboy
Perseverance will make you conquer
Do not get impatient
We'll reach the water in just a moment
Keep working my brother
I'll see a sign we'll reach the water
Digger, digger waterboy
Don't stop till you reach the water
Digger, digger waterboy
Perseverance will make you conquer
The task now is ended
I am sure we'll be recommended
Now will you believe me
That perseverance will make it easy
Digger, digger waterboy
Don't stop till you reach the water
Digger, digger waterboy
Perseverance will make you conquer
The song "Perseverance" by Count Lasher is a motivational folk tune that encourages individuals to hold on despite the challenges they encounter. The lyrics center around someone working as a waterboy using a digger to excavate to reach the water beneath the rocky ground. The singer encourages the digger to persevere in their task, in order to achieve their goal.
The opening lines "Boldly hold on your digger, Get set, we're going to leave, And the ground beneath us is rocky, but perseverance will make easy" sets the tone for the entire song. The songwriter is acknowledging the rocky terrain and the difficulty level of the task, but encourages the worker to remain steadfast and believe that with perseverance they will overcome.
As the song progresses, the singer reassures the digger that their work will reap rewards if they are willing to put in the effort. He goes on to suggest that even though the work is challenging, it is essential to keep going until the goal is achieved.
Furthermore, the lyrics stress the need to work hard and not give up hope or get impatient. The lines "Don't wait for tomorrow, work today we will end the sorrow," emphasize the need to take immediate action and understand that hard work pays off in the end.
