Danny Boy
Countdown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so!

But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,
You'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,

For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Danny Boy tell a poignant tale of love, loss, and separation. It seems to be a message from a lover who is bidding farewell to his beloved, Danny, who must leave him to answer the call of duty. The melody of the pipes echoes through the valleys and mountains as Danny leaves, and the singer remains behind contemplating his departure. The changing seasons further emphasize the passing of time and the inevitability of change. The singer promises to be waiting for Danny's return and hopes to have the chance to be reunited with him either when the summer brings new life to the meadow or when the winter snow blankets the valley. The singer's love for Danny is evident throughout the song, and even in death, he longs for Danny's return and his love.

The song grew in popularity in America during the 1910s and 1920s, particularly among Irish-American communities, as a symbol of Irish heritage and pride. However, its roots can be traced back to the Irish folk song "Londonderry Air," which was first published in Dublin in 1855. The original melody and lyrics vary significantly from the version we know today, which was a modified version created by English songwriter Frederic Weatherly in 1910. The song's simplicity and emotional message have made it a popular song for funerals and other solemn occasions, as well as a powerful symbol of Irish cultural identity.

Congrats!
Any moment of personal triumph is wonderful.

About 3 years ago, I solved the conundrum and was screaming the word at my computer.
Nobody got it!
When they revealed the word, it wasn't what I got!
I very carefully researched my word, checked the letters supplied and discovered I too was correct.
I felt so superior until I freaked out about a buzzer going off... And then realized, 'Oh. My laundry is done.'
I live alone. Not so much for my benefit but for that of others not having to endure me.

@Puke Lius Hitler got caught on a conundrum and it blew his mind. (Out the back of his skull.)

@jeric_ synergy How did Hitler lose? I thought Axis did. And if entertainers could make war happen, it would be dramatic.

RLviddy

Same.

@Bolty , that's ok: it's better to do the puzzle than be stressed by the clock.

That said, I'm amazed how many of the entertainers are quite good at this. No wonder Hitler lost.

I really enjoyed the Chris Hoy song! Bouncy, upbeat & just fun. The Dictionary Corner segments are hit or miss. When they're good, they're really good, & when they're not so good, it seems they'll never end. But I've watched this bit several times now. I know nothing about the subject at all, but it's a catchy tune. Alex Horne & the Horne section never fail to deliver!
