Tennis
Courting Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Double-glazed in the summer house
A wristwatch kickback
Luxury furnishing
Did we all take it a bit too far?
"You said you liked me in cricket whites!"
"But what would your dad think?"
Tell me
It's just a questionnaire
I'm not a guesthouse
There is trade involved
There is trade involved
There is trade involved
I'm paying you to fuck me
I've been playing ball
Since the first serve
Just playing tennis
Just playing tennis
Just playing tennis
Just playing tennis
I'm not some piggybank, you can't just piggyback off me
There is trade involved, I was paying you to love me
Yeah, I was paying you, and I'm in great shape
And the grass is always greener in the country house
I've got a celebratory blue wig, with stripes down the side
You're a night in the Holiday Inn
I'm a breakfast bar with an unusual toasting conveyor belt
This is not your name
You don't own it, and we can't share it anymore
I've grown up so much since Tuesday
And I can count the hairs on my chest now
All the best to the sleigh bell operator
But I can go at it alone
This is a solo project, and the hits will be stronger for it
I've been playing ball for over a year
Been playing ball for over a year
Just playing tennis
Just playing tennis
Just playing tennis
Just playing tennis
This is a solo project, and the hits will be stronger for it
The lyrics of Courting's song "Tennis" explore themes of relationships, power dynamics, and self-reflection. The song begins with the singer offering to be a "paypig" for their partner, suggesting that they can provide financial support in exchange for love. The lyrics move on to describe luxury living arrangements, including a summer house and luxury furnishings, as well as a wristwatch and cricket whites that the partner supposedly likes. The lyrics then take on a more reflective tone, with the singer questioning if they had gone too far in their actions and asking their partner if smaller muscles would be more attractive.
The chorus of the song, "Just playing tennis," repeats several times throughout the song, juxtaposing the themes of luxury and power dynamics with the casual, everyday activity of playing tennis. In the second verse, the singer questions the nature of their relationship and trade involved, stating that they were paying their partner for affection. The lyrics then describe the singer's physical shape and possessions, again highlighting themes of luxury and power. The song ends with the singer reflecting on personal growth and the possibility of moving forward alone in a "solo project."
Overall, "Tennis" explores complex emotions and power dynamics within a romantic relationship, touching on themes of materialism, self-reflection, and personal growth.

Post punk? I coin the name of this genre as "landfill indie revival"...and as someone who was a teenager in the 2000s, I love it!

You know, song like this, is like a story of our generation. Kids are singing it at their graduation, or at the wedding, or at the funeral. Truly one of defining moments of our time that should be remembered as once in a lifetime experience.

This is so good, I heard it when I was travelling with my daughter. Because I do all the driving she hijacks the stereo which isn't a bad thing as she has pretty good taste. I was lucky enough to grow up in Liverpool at the right time to catch the Eric's matinees, so this is right up my street, it has a kind of Fall vibe to it, just the sparse jangly guitars, and the way the lad half sings half talks, is very Mark E Smith.
