Chain Of Fools
Covay Don Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chain, chain, chain, chain, chain, chain
Chain, chain, chain, chain of fools
Five long years I thought you were my man
But I found out I'm just a link in your chain
You got me where you want me
I ain't nothing but your fool
You treated me mean oh you treated me cruel
Chain, chain, chain, chain of fools

Every chain has got a weak link
I might be weak child, but I'll give you strength
You told me to leave you alone
My father said come on home
My doctor said take it easy
Whole bunch of lovin' is much too strong
I'm added to your chain, chain, chain
Chain, chain, chain, chain,
Chain, chain of fools

One of these mornings the chain is gonna break
But up until then, yeah, I'm gonna take all I can take

Chain, chain, chain, chain, chain, chain
Chain, chain, chain, chain of fools

Overall Meaning

In โ€œChain of Fools,โ€ Covay Don sings about a woman who has been misled and taken for granted in her relationship. The repeated lyrics โ€œChain, chain, chain, chain, chain, chainโ€ represent the idea of being trapped, bound, and constrained in a situation that is ultimately painful and frustrating. The โ€œchain of foolsโ€ is the metaphorical chain that binds the woman to her unfaithful partner.

The woman has been with her partner for five years, thinking that he was her man. But she soon realizes that she is just one link in a chain of women that her partner uses and discards at his will. He has made her his fool, treating her cruelly and disrespectfully. Despite being aware of this, the woman still allows herself to be controlled and trapped. She is aware that every chain has weak links, and she may be one of them. But she claims that she will give her partner strength despite her own weakness.

The woman receives advice from different people telling her to leave, take it easy or return home, but she feels she cannot escape the hold her partner has on her. The song ends with the woman anticipating the chain to break someday, but until then, she will take what she can take - clearly indicating that she is giving away more than she is receiving in the relationship.

Don Covay (love him!) only changed the words to Elijah Fair's, "Pains of Life"... ย I'm not a 'know-it-all', I just found out myself last week.

Thanks much. I've been listening to Otis Rush a lot lately, and he used a bunch of riffs that were other artists originally. But back in the 50s, it seems that it was accepted to borrow riffs from others. Later on it got more litigious.

I would of liked to hear him sing it. Aretha Franklin version is great. I just wonder how a man's version would sound.
