Rude Boy
Cowboys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Hey look at Michael
He's a rude boy
Don't know what he wants to be
Hey look at Michael
Such a rude boy
And he hates authority
Hey look at Michael
He's a rude boy
A moddy dresser he's all right
Hey look at Michael
Such a rude boy
He's going to dance away the night

He's just a rebel, a rebel with no cause
His mom and dad are strung out on the sauce
He's a rudie, a rudie that is lost
Can't stand his job, and he hates his stinkin' boss

Hey look at Michael
He's a rude boy
Don't know what he wants to be
Hey look at Michael
Such a rude boy
And he hates authority
Hey look at Michael
He's a rude boy
And he's thrashing in the streets
Hey look at Michael
Such a rude boy
But he ain't no social freak

He's just a rebel, a rebel with no cause
His mom and dad are strung out on the sauce
He's a rudie, a rudie that is lost
Can't stand his job, and he hates his stinkin' boss

He's a rebel with a ninth grade education
He wears his badge of strife against the nation
He's a rudy with a teenage fascination
He's just a rebel livin' in a brand new generation

Hey look at Michael
He's a rude boy
A moddy dresser he's all right
Hey look at Michael
Such a rude boy
He's gonna dance away the night
Hey look at Michael
He's a rude boy
Don't know what he wants to be
Hey look at Michael
Such a rude boy
And he hates authority
Hey look at Michael
He's a rude boy
Being chased down by the law
Hey look at Michael
Such a rude boy
And I hope he don't get caught
Hey look at Michael
He's a rude boy
La la la la la la la
Hey look at Michael
Such a rude boy
La la la la la la la
Hey look at Michael
He's a rude boy

La la la la la la la
Hey look at Michael

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Rude Boy" by Cowboys paint a vivid picture of a character named Michael, who is depicted as a rebellious and defiant individual. Michael is described as a "rude boy" who is unsure of his future aspirations and has a disdain for authority figures. The repetitive nature of the lines "Hey look at Michael" emphasizes the focus on this character's rebellious nature and non-conformity to societal norms.

The song portrays Michael as a figure who challenges the status quo and rebels against the expectations placed upon him. His disregard for authority and societal rules is highlighted through the lyrics that mention his dislike for his job and his "stinkin' boss." The mention of his parents being "strung out on the sauce" suggests a dysfunctional family background, which may have contributed to Michael's rebellious behavior and alienation from authority figures.

The lyrics further emphasize Michael's rebellious nature by describing him as a "rebel with no cause" and a "rudie that is lost." Despite his rebellious attitude and disregard for authority, he is also depicted as someone who seeks solace in music and dancing, as he plans to "dance away the night." This juxtaposition of defiance and escapism highlights the complexity of Michael's character and his struggle to find his identity and purpose.

The references to Michael's education level, his badge of strife against the nation, and his teenage fascination paint a picture of a young man grappling with societal expectations and seeking validation through his rebellious actions. The song suggests that Michael is a product of his environment and the generation he belongs to, facing challenges and uncertainties as he navigates through life. Overall, "Rude Boy" offers a poignant exploration of rebellion, defiance, and the search for individuality in a world that often imposes limitations and expectations.

Oh my god...I can’t believe I found this ... we used to see The Cowboys every damn time they played in Portland, and every show at Luis La Bamba...Ian, Jeff, Marty, helped me get evicted from my apartment listening to Clash albums after one of their shows, used to hang at the VC. ‘I’m a Police Car...loved when they played that song. Great memories guys...and RIP Ian, y’all are some of my best memories of the 80’s in the PNW ❤️
