History
Craig Stickland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We had red eyes
Almost all the time
And in the haze of those wasted hours
You had ways of reading my mind

But all we have is history
Between us now
Caught up in a mystery
That I can't figure out
I think about those car rides
Our lives sped into my sweetest memories
And every time I think I'm free

Get caught up in our history
It's always been a mystery
How you became my history

We used to hate those kinds of people
But now those people are you and I
And ever since you've become a stranger
All that's left are my red eyes

But all we have is history
Between us now
Caught up in a mystery
That I can't figure out
I think about those car rides
Our lives sped into my sweetest memories
And every time I think I'm free

Get caught up in our history
It's always been a mystery
How you became my history

If history's repeated
Where are you and I
If history repeated
Would we fall back in time

All we have is history
Between us now
Caught up in a mystery
That I can't figure out
I think about those car rides
Our lives sped into my sweetest memories
And every time I think I'm free

Get caught up in our history

It's always been a mystery
How you became my history

Overall Meaning

Craig Stickland's song "History" is a reflection on a past relationship that has become a mystery to the artist. The song starts by setting the scene of the relationship with the line "We had red eyes almost all the time" which can be interpreted as the couple having spent many sleepless nights together, perhaps partying or discussing their future together. However, Stickland notes that even though they spent so much time together, they were still unable to fully understand each other, saying "You had ways of reading my mind".

The chorus of the song echoes the sentiment of the lost connection with the line "But all we have is history between us now, caught up in a mystery that I can't figure out". This highlights the fact that even though they shared so much together, the relationship has ended and the memories are all that remains. Stickland reminisces on the good times the couple shared, particularly the car rides which he describes as the "sweetest memories" of his life. Despite having moved on, he still gets caught up in their history, showing how deep the connection between the two really was.

Towards the end of the song, Stickland poses an interesting question; "if history's repeated, where are you and I?". It is clear that the artist is wondering if they could ever reconnect and start over again. Overall, "History" is a reflective and emotive song that explores the depth of connection between two people and the enduring nature of memories.
