Punk Is Dead
Crass Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yes that's right, punk is dead,
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head.
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors,
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters.
CBS promote the Clash,
But it ain't for revolution, it's just for cash.
Punk became a fashion just like hippy used to be
And it ain't got a thing to do with you or me.

Movements are systems and systems kill.
Movements are expressions of the public will.
Punk became a movement 'cause we all felt lost,
But the leaders sold out and now we all pay the cost.
Punk narcissism was social napalm,
Steve Jones started doing real harm.
Preaching revolution, anarchy and change
As he sucked from the system that had given him his name.

Well I'm tired of staring through shit stained glass,
Tired of staring up a superstars arse,
I've got an arse and crap and a name,
I'm just waiting for my fifteen minutes fame.
Steve Jones you're napalm,
If you're so pretty (vacant) why do you swarm?
Patti Smith you're napalm,
You write with your hand but it's Rimbaud's arm.

And me, yes I, do I want to burn?
Is there something I can learn?
Do I need a business man to promote my angle?
Can I resist the carrots that fame and fortune dangle?
I see the velvet zippies in their bondage gear,
The social elite with safety-pins in their ear,
I watch and understand that it don't mean a thing,
The scorpions might attack, but the systems stole the sting.

PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.

PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.

Overall Meaning

Crass's song "Punk Is Dead" criticizes the commercialization and mainstream commodification of the punk movement. The song explores the idea that punk was initially a reaction against the status quo, a way for the disillusioned youth to express their discontent with the societies they inhabited. However, as the movement became fashionable, punk was stripped of its original intent, becoming just another product marketed to consumers. According to the lyrics, the corporate industry exploited punk rock to sell it to people, and in their promotion of musicians like the Clash, who began as a punk movement, but later sold out to make money. Punk rock was turned into a fashion statement, and its initial concern for social revolution and change was lost. The lyrics ask whether it's possible to maintain punk's original meaning and purpose, rejecting the idea that a "businessman" is necessary to promote an ideology.

The song also explores the idea that "movements are systems and systems kill." This suggests that, in becoming a movement that people identify with, whether or not that movement begins as a reaction, it eventually becomes its own contained system. Systems, as the lyrics assert, eventually lead to the downfall of a movement. The punk movement's leaders sold out, compromising their views, and, in the process, the movement lost its relevance. The lyrics criticize people like Steve Jones, who began as a punk musician, but eventually became a part of selling out punk for their own financial gain. The lyrics also examine the idea of fame and fortune, asking whether it's possible to resist the temptations of celebrity.

I can't say I agree. Sure, the later works of The Clash are easy to see in mainstream media, but that doesn't stop people going back and checking the first couple of albums, which were amazing, and reading about the band when they started, or watching videos of their live performances - punks are such history nerds after all. The common comment you'll hear about The Clash is "First albums are good...later ones suck!"

I heard all the later stuff when growing up and hated the band, it wasn't till I checked out the first albums did I start to like them...even though I find Strummer a bit of a hypocrite.

Everyone I know likes The Clash, or at least their early work, whether they are 14 (I work with kids) or my own peers (35-45), none of us were there at the time (obviously).

I think it also really depends which sub-group of punks you talk to. The old school and '77 lot tend to like The Clash, the crusties, anarcho-punks and a lot of the Hardcore kids tend not to.

Just my experience and opinion....now, the amount of people who hate Crass is another subject! :)

@David RamírezI'm pretty new to punk so I decided to start with classic bands: Exploited, Black Flag, Disorder, Chaos Uk, GG Allin, Discharge, Void, etc. I don't really know new bands, please don't be an elitist.because it doesn't make sense.

@David Ramírez and the comment with Punk s not dead was a reference to this song, because the guy above said Punk is dead or something.

Punk is a attitude one that says "Fuck This" to things that are there to control you also punk is something that you yourself are no matter how you dress or what music you listen to as long as there are still people with enough balls to stand up and say "Fuck This" then there still be punks out there in the world

boywiththeblackveil

Punk's an idea. And ideas never die. The movement is underground. But punk's not dead. And it never will be.

W;P

Ideas die and the underground is a myth
