Skinned
Crawl Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll make a shoehorn outta your skin
I'll make a lampshade of durable skin
And oh, don't you know that I'm always feelin' able
When I'm sittin' home and I'm carving out your navel

When will I realize that this skin I'm in
Hey, it isn't mine
And when will the kill be too much meat for me to hide on

Hey, I could really use a couple of hands
To complete one hell of a plant stand
Oh, and don't you know that I'm caught here in the middle
Making rib cages into coffee tables
I'm just makin' em into coffee tables

And when I realize that this skin I'm in
Hey, it isn't mine
And when will the thrill be too much meat for me to find anymore

Oh, because you know I can't hide
But oh how hard I try
But this is just the shape I'm in, oh yeah
And though you know I can't hide

But oh how hard I try
But this is just the shape I'm in

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Crawl's song Skinned contain imagery that immediately horrifies the listener, with the singer stating that they will create a shoehorn out of someone's skin and a lampshade from another individual's flesh. This serves to set the tone of the song as unsettling and violent. The singer then goes on to describe their compulsion to carve up their victims, appearing to relish in the act, suggesting they sit at home to create stomach-churning ornamentation.

The next verse sees the singer appear to question themselves, wondering when they will realise that the skin isn't theirs and when the "kill", or the number of people they have murdered, will be too much for them to handle. This could be interpreted as the singer struggling with their own identity and the atrocities they have committed, as well as debating whether to stop or continue.

The final verse repeats the refrain of the skin not being the singer's, and how they struggle to hide their true self. This is a common theme within serial killer stories, the struggle of being caught between the public and private personas. The song ends on a tense note, with the singer confirming they cannot hide but how hard they try, suggesting the compulsions they have are too strong.

Bleed/Crawl was a big influence me growing up as I was in Green Bay, WI during the years of this band killing it. Seeing such music live at 14/15 years of age and their writing is superb and is still great to listen today. I believe they were dealt a bad hand as the singer quit and the record label crumbled. They would have been just as popular as Pitch Shifter, Fear Factory, Godflesh.... well nearly perhaps. But this record is phenomenal in the industrial metal genre.

It's Sad That Nobody Mentions Nailbomb,Godflesh,Crawl, Skrew, Klank, Red Harvest, Strapping Young Lad or 3TEETH. Underrated Metal Industrial Bands

Here is a link to the same band when they were called Bleed. The Womb demo of half the songs on Crawl - Earth. I almost like this demo better as the guitars are more powerful in the mix. It's a toss up.

Looked for the Crawl cd cant find it over here in u.k at moment. If you do make music in this style please share.

Those CD or the genre in general?
The genre is kinda niche and died with the 90's saddly (tho, I'm working on something in the same style at the moment), but you can easily found those albums on Amazon's used CD's, got the Crawl one for a few bucks, and the whole Pitchshifter discography for something like 10bucks, since no one care about that type of music nowadays, they just want to get rid of it.
