Sleep What's That?
Crimpshrine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a country where I can decide
Will I be jailed or will I abide?
By these laws which I do not believe apply
With all this freedom I have no voice
With all this freedom I have no choice
With all this freedom that I can't find
Only for one kind
And every day seems so important
And every day seems so necessary
Try to take my freedom away
Always dreaming about what I can't be
And if this country is so free
Then why am I arrested for trying to sleep?
And I know a place that's free
But why must it entail poverty?
So much food to eat
And so many homes to sleep in
Stores so full of food
So why must I eat from a garbage bin?
There's 1600 people walking around today
Thinking life's a little game to play
Try to avoid police abduction
Try to avoid hunger and self destruction
Maybe if you could realize that all you're freedom is based on lies

Maybe there's no lifestyle that I want to keep
If I could just get some sleep...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Crimpshrine's song "Sleep What's That?" are a commentary on the illusion of freedom in society. The singer is questioning their freedom in a country where they are subject to laws they don't believe apply to them. They feel voiceless and without choice despite the facade of freedom. The singer contrasts the abundance of food and homes with the prevalence of poverty and starvation. The irony of the situation is that with all the freedom that is promised, the singer is arrested for trying to sleep. The song highlights the struggles of those who are marginalized and oppressed, and how true freedom is elusive and based on lies.

This record never gets old. Those years were such a great time as a teen in the local punk scenes in cities all across the USA.

It's the money or stop

Gotta say, this is very solid, the drums sound gritty, the vocals are raw, the melodies are solid, guitar tones got a good amount of distortion and that bass....that bass is probably the best I've heard in awhile, fantastic

I was born in '71 and one of the girls I was dating said what was I into in highschool because I was too young to have been a punker. I said you were not there in '88 when bands like crimpshrine were putting out great records. Although, accepted now It is still alive in some form today. It is not accurate what they write in history of punk 101 books that punk was over in '80 or the early eighties. when I got into it in '86 it was very much alive, at least for me and my friends it was.

Gill Serrano

It's been gentrified but not dead.

+Frank Humphries I totally agree. I born in 1970. I started listening to punk rock in 1984. I think that some of the best hardcore/punk bands were active way after 1980. In fact some of my favorites were around after the 80's. I do feel like the energy that was present in the 80's scene was unmatched just because it was new. The Gorilla Biscuits song "New Direction" pretty much sums up how I feel about that. 46 now and still a HXC punk kid.

Awesome. I remember when they were in Minnesnowta and Aaron came over to our practice spot (which was our guitar players basement) and he rocked on on the kit. We'd only been playin for a year or two so he blew our minds. These guys rule.

Joseph Negrette
