I love how the officer goes around telling everyone “Yeah, I lit it!” Exactly how the old man said it💀And the old man deserves an Oscar for that casual "Is that usual?". Poor guy, hope he gets the help he needs. Despite the incident, I love the teamwork of both departments of the FD and PD on this incident. Seems they have a great relationship with each other. We need more inner agency cooperation between emergency services across the states. It really makes a difference and tasks run much smoothly

I honestly think that most Police, Fire, and EMS get along very well. They work with each other in lots of different kinds of incidents like car wrecks with injuries or entrapment. There is bound to be someplace where politics or some personal grudge has gotten in the way, but I think that is not the norm.

See, there’s the difference between the police officers saying, “He’s out of it,” and the nurse, “Aw, he’s special.” They’re all showing incredible compassion for someone who destroyed property intentionally and could have caused death and injury, but it’s a different level of respect and understanding that illness can happen to anyone.

No offense but that’s life. Literally any day on any minute something from someone else’s stupidity or just a freak accident could be the end. Can’t live your life in fear every minute. Cooking fires from accidents could burn it down, it’s happened, people aren’t 100% accurate or perfect and sometimes catastrophes happen from something that started as a minor oversight. Its simply life for better or worse.

I wouldn’t be able to live in a mental prison like that. Then again don’t take it from me, I’m also an adrenaline junkie and a massive risk taker so maybe I’m not one to talk towards this particular crowd. But hey my life, I’m making the best of it. I’ve been through some pretty rough tragedies like anyone else and currently facing two more awful situations and you know I how deal with them? Humor. People think it’s callous of me to deal with problems like but hey again it works for me and makes it so I can live life. Please everyone check in on your parents, grandparents, and elderly. Sometimes all they need is someone to talk to to keep them happy and from going off the walls. The older we get the less friends and contacts we have, which makes living a lot harder.

Vietnam vets got treated pretty bad in the 70s and 80s, but we have done a lot for them since. I have the up most respect for our vets, but their 4 to 8 years of services doesn't entitle them to a paycheck for life. Free medical and education alone is a lot. It wasn't till Vietnam that veterans felt like the government owned them something beyond their years of service that they knew what they were signing up for. Before that they went out and started families and got jobs. I know there was mental health issues and many kids back then felt the wrath of it. The reality is the Boomers had it easier growing up than the Silent and Greatest generation and as a result they just couldn't mentally handle war the same way. I really don't think kids today could handle it at all.

There was a similar incident in my city but the guy then realized he was trapped and jumped off the fourth floor and ended up dying. So many people were left homeless and many pets were lost as it was a very large apartment building. So sad.
This is why I hate apartment buidlings. I have a neighbor right now that has threatened to burn the place.

The residents just standing around is the same energy as seeing a dangerous creature and your first instinct is "Touch". Where were they when they were learning about fire safety? These people need to learn some common sense. That being said, it is an amazing feeling when you know you literally saved someone's life, it is a rush you will never find from anything else in life. I’m not gonna lie the whole part about how the officer and the nurses where talking made me feel happy, it was a really wholesome moment from the entire situation

Everyone always thinks they'll act rationally and work through all the proper steps during an emergency like a well-oiled machine, but they never account for the shock. People just freeze. It's pretty crazy to witness it in person.

It's not really anything to do with common sense, 90% of people are well aware of what they should be doing. They're just in an involuntary mental state (shock) and completely fogged over.

Sadly, if you read the description, his psychosis is due to substance abuse. With his history as a veteran & age, it’s most likely to be alcohol related dementia. Still very sad that his mind is so affected, quite possibly from self-medicating due to effects from military service, or just from chronic alcohol or drug abuse. Yes, people like him do need more help though. But it’s difficult with people who chronically abuse drugs &/or alcohol. They don’t want to stop, and there are few places that will allow them to drink/take drugs because of the problems that come with that, of violence, abuse, self-neglect etc. And they’ve often alienated their family & friends, so they live alone in the community until they can’t. It’s a real Catch 22.

My grandmother passed away during Covid. She never contracted Covid. She died from loneliness and isolation. She died because she lost hope and gave up. Too much time alone has the potential to drive most people into deep depression or even madness in this gentleman’s case. The last couple years of her life were lonely and I will never forgive myself for not dropping off some food to her or something. There were other reasons i hadn’t visited (manic / schizophrenic aunt who lived with my grandparents) but I still should’ve shown up. I wish I had used the money I made to go see her instead of spending it on myself. Cherish your grandparents. No one should feel that unheard to the brink of acting out and plunging into a delusional solitude

As a Red Cross volunteer in Upstate NY I can tell you the local chapter would certainly respond and assist those tenants. I've personally done a few events where some odd fellow caused a fire causing temporary homelessness for his fellow tenants. Every property management company should have their local Red Cross saved in contacts for just such an event.

I am very happy to see that the police treated this man with dignity and compassion. They didn't treat him like a criminal. It was obvious that his mental state was deteriorated; they recognized that, and made special efforts to determine the best way to deal with him.

These officers give me hope for a brighter future. This is how public service should be performed. I sincerely hope that; God forbid, I am found and assisted by such people if I am unfortunate enough to become so mentally incapacitated.

My heart goes out to that man, and I hope he ends up somewhere with people who will take good care of him.

Absolute kudos to the Officer who suspected a possible UTI.
Anyone taking care of a senior who notices a rapid onset 'dementia' personality shift, take note, it may be as simple as a UTI, it can affect seniors mentally, where nothing more than antibiotics is needed! Unfortunately, this seems to not be the case with this gentleman.

I know what you mean. My elderly mother had a UTI, and she acted really wacky. We learned from the dr, that UTI's are common in seniors. They can cause temporary changes in behavior and speech.

TIA’s are less likely to cause an unusual change in behaviour, since they usually cause temporary stroke symptoms. Urinary tract infections can definitely cause abnormal behaviour in elderly people. I’m a Paramedic & I’ve seen quite a few elderly people affected. There was one woman in particular who was just heartbreaking. She was so well dressed, well groomed & well spoken but she was trying to pinch me, bite me & kick me as I brought her into the hospital. I think if she had any idea how she was behaving, she’d have been absolutely horrified.

The brain is a terrible thing when it ends up failing. Poor folk don’t even realise what’s going on. I genuinely feel it would be a kindness to allow folk in an advanced state of dementia to be given a large dose of morphine, tucked up in a warm bed in a place they feel safe and be allowed to go to sleep forever. Dementia is a very cruel affliction and it’s so sad to see the effects on the sufferer, the families and people who’ve been caught up inadvertently.

Without knowing all the details of the resident’s medical history, calling him “a weirdo” is a bit harsh. You never know what’s going on in someone’s life that causes them to do the things they do especially with the elderly.

the 90 yr old vet clearly has mental health issues and needs help, but these people just want to mock him. IMO this is a major root cause of all of the biggest problems in society - the people who are supposed to help vulnerable people in need, just mock them and act indifferent. so horrible

He was most likely in Vietnam and may have had something happen. My father is about 2 years younger and has told me many stories about Vietnam. The substance abuse most likely came from what he's been through. Unless you've lived it, you won't understand.

My grandfather on my dads side was in hardened combat over there from the draft after he got out of high school. He told me war stories that still make me shudder. My grandmother said in the middle of the night he’d have war nightmares and choke her thinking he had an enemy. She also stated he didn’t smoke or drink before he was deployed, but when he came back, he was a scarred and changed man. Alcohol and cigarettes ended up taking him at just turning 64. Died of heart problems from the cigarettes and alcohol but in the autopsy, found his liver was also beginning to fail from abuse.

My great uncle did this to his duplex home and to a barn ten years prior.
Extreme paranoid schizophrenia with hallucinations is serious.
Managed well enough for years til about this man's age. He'd think he was 'better' and not take his meds as diligently ...

When they say this guy’s MH issues were a result of substance abuse, they most likely mean alcoholic dementia for a guy of that age, rather than drugs. Unless he had side effects from medication. So although his substance abuse is probably ultimately responsible for his mental health disorder, he’s clearly not in his right mind. I feel terrible for the people whose homes were damaged, but I do feel sorry for him as well to a degree.

Poor guy, it appears he may have schizoaffective disorder (just speculation). I have seen other vets with this mental health disorder and I have a sister-in-law with schizophrenia. I hope he gets the proper treatment and medication.
UPDATE: I just saw the description where the psychiatrist determined his actions were substance abuse related.

When I was 15 me and a friend of mine skipped school one day and we were walking around our neighborhood. We saw an older man setting a house on fire. The house had 6 or 7 apartments in it . We were able to wake everyone up and get them out of the house and then we caught the guy down the street and held him until police got there. The news wanted to put me and my friend on tv and interview us as heros but we didn’t want our parents to see us on the news because we had skipped school . So the news even said on tv that 2 young men who didn’t want to be named saved a lot of people that day. I never did tell my parents that it was me and my friend Jeff .

Poor old guy probably doesn’t even know what he did wrong. Probably related to post traumatic stress disorder if he really was a veteran. I think more kids and relatives should check in on the elderly. He’s obviously suffering some mental distress. I hope he got he help he needed it and I’m glad everybody made it out OK.

this is what can happen to the mind when its been through what his has, we will see a lot of contact sport stars end up with similar brain trauma. It could be CTE, dementia etc. It said he shot at someone a few weeks before this incident. He should have been hospitalised the first time round and that way he won't have access to things to do hard + even those with CTE and dementia etc can be talked down if their loved ones or carers have a chance. Leaving them alone is the worst thing we can do.

This truly breaks my heart, yes he did it and I'm so glad no one was hurt. But you can tell he is having problems I don't know if it's age related or caused by medication or a growth. But whatever the case may be it's heart breaking. All of he sounded like he was trying to get someone out there and that's the only way he could think of doing it at that point in time. I truly don't think it's just because he wanted to start a fire and hurt anyone. I hope his family has a way to get him closer to them or with someone who can check up on him very regularly or around the clock. But that is someone's father, son, brother but not only that this man fought for our country and has lived a long life. I'm sure taking care of others and now he needs someone to do it for him. God bless you sir thank you for your service. And please God watch over him guide him and protect him and thank you lord for making sure everyone was OK in this sad situation. 😔

I bet this guy used to be a nice dude but then ended up with dementia. My grandpa was nice person who wouldn't hurt nobody but he got dementia and it led to him threatening to kill his eldest son, which clearly he would never do. When he was in the hospital he started to get aggressive with the staff and thankfully they dealt with him in a proper way and some of the nurses even adored him. It's awful seeing someone be taken by something like dementia and basically change that person

I work as a EMT and hospitals are so fortunate to have police officers have a regular presence. As a EMT we are told to not forcefully control patients and I don’t know the protocol for nurses cause I’m still new and still learning but when there’s a patient acting like that man is it lucky that officers are there. We need to stop calling people like this a “weirdo” or “crazy person”, IMO.
I fully care for and support my mom who has dementia and gets very paranoid. It’s just like any other medical issue as we get older. Some people have bad knees, backs, hearts, cancer, etc. and others may suffer from more mental disorders. They are not “weirdo’s”. I think it’s clear this older gentleman is suffering from some form of mental issues and hopefully someone will get him help. (Jail, getting arrested, etc. are not help in this case).
