Me too. Much of my childhood and teenage years were spent in Boston Children’s Hospital. After the middle of sixth grade I couldn’t go to school anymore. I didn’t get those bonds and when I did go to school I was picked on terribly for being physically disabled. I don’t have friends. 99% of my time is spent alone. I have my dog and the human interaction I do get is my immediate family. I don’t have any buddies. And the few I have had over the years didn’t treat me like a friend. I have been alone so much that I feel more alone around people than I do alone in my house with my puppy Freya.

And you're right, this line was delivered so masterfully by Tom Hanks that you can't help but feel a pang in your heart when you hear it because you can hear the pain, fear and conflict in his voice.

Sparrows in The Bible are the ones God sees and knows when they die (according to Jesus).
“Five sparrows are sold for only two pennies, and God does not forget any of them"
And if one was in the rain, it would be exposed to the Holy Spirit, who comes in rain.
A sparrow might still be lonely in the rain, lacking human sensibilities, but we should not be, and John truly was not...

A lot of people in this world are unaccepting and unkind. That's just the way of it. Some people are blessed with good friends and family to ease the pain of loneliness, while others are not so much. Both Frank Darabont AND Michael Clarke Duncan commented on how most actors would usually do their part in a dialogue scene and then leave when the camera was turned on the other guy...but Hanks was so committed and wanted so badly for Duncan to nail this scene, he stuck around and stayed focused on his scene partner - giving an incredible performance just reacting to John Coffey's every line.

I saw this movie when I was 18 and have never cried so much. I'm sure now, at 23 I will understand it on an even deeper level. However, the book itself made me cry like a child.

I believe this scene to be a demonstration of how skilled Tom Hanks is as an actor. When he tells John why he has to consider letting John run away, he sounds like he’s on the brink of tears, unable to really handle this situation anymore, and he fears what might happen if he kills John Coffey.

I find it difficult to reconcile this scene with ending where Paul suggests his longevity is a punishment from God. Coffey clearly states Paul is doing what he wants and that he himself would declare to God that Paul performed a "kindness".

It’s sad how the people in this world are still ugly to each other. This is what I love about The Green Mile is that it teaches lessons about not to discriminate someone no matter your color, gender or whatever the case may be. We need to start loving more!

This Movie is pure sadness. And the worst thing is that only few people will watch this masterpiece nowadays, and even fewer will undarstand what it mean. Every living being should watch this movie to see what happens when you got no good inside of you. Im only afraid that many people will find this Film boring, where it is in fact very deep and emotional.
I experience that nowadays so many people, ESPECIALY young people, are so cruel to each other, to a point that they would find the action of Wild Bill quote "hilarious" ?! THIS IS DREADFUL .

watched this film a long time ago. The messages and the scenes of this movie still haunts me as if I've just watched it recently. People of today's world are even uglier to each other. I don't even know what to say anymore about it. Watching this movie just makes life sad because of how honest and truthful it is in our time right now.

This movie, and mostly it's characters, are portrayed in a way, that just robs me of the ability to contain myself.
It inspires me to be something good in the world, even though I know that I will never live up to being good, I will try my best to not bring any ugly into the world, which, by my definition, is not bad.

Do not compare the 2000s with the 1930s. Those times were terrible, much, much worse than now. The sheer amount of crimes being committed, WW1 aftermaths, and the rising tensions in Europe leading to WW2. It was just a terrible time. Be grateful you are not living in that treacherous time. Humanity has significantly improved into becoming a better society, but still far from a perfect one. But we are slowly but surely getting there.
