Come On Mess Me Up
Cub Sport Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were walking on Sparkes Street growing up real fast
I left it behind pretty quickly, still the farthest thing from pretty
I found comfort, I fell in love with avoiding problems
We were riding on Smith Street we were right on track
I left it behind without sinking, they all said I wasn't thinking
I found comfort, I fell in love with avoiding problems
But I want this, you know I want this
So come on, mess me up
And you can break me if you'll still take me
Ruin me, if you'll let me be one of the ones you say you won't forget
β€˜Cause I want this, you know I want this
So come on, mess me up
I was stumbling on Suffolk throwing up real hard
Inside was kind of misty, I knew none of the history
I found comfort, I fell in love with avoiding problems
And that was the problem
β€˜Cause I want this, you know I want this
So come on, mess me up
And you can break me if you'll still take me
Ruin me, if you'll let me be one of the ones you say you won't forget
β€˜Cause I want this, you know I want this
So come on, mess me up

β€˜Cause I want this, you know I want this
So come on, mess me up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Come on Mess Me Up by Cub Sport describe the singer's desire to break out of their comfort zone and experience something new, possibly even painful or destructive, in order to truly feel alive. They reflect on their past, recalling memories of growing up and finding comfort in avoiding problems. However, they realize that this avoidance has hindered their growth and they crave the intensity and excitement that comes with taking risks and pushing boundaries. The chorus of the song is a plea for someone to "mess them up," to break them and ruin them if need be, in order to feel fully alive and be remembered as someone who took risks and lived passionately.

The line "I found comfort, I fell in love with avoiding problems" is particularly insightful, as it highlights the desire for safety and stability that often holds people back from pursuing their dreams or taking chances. It acknowledges that while avoiding problems may feel good in the moment, it ultimately prevents growth and limits one's potential.

The repetition of the line "I want this, you know I want this" in the chorus emphasizes the singer's determination and eagerness to experience something new and intense, even if it means getting hurt in the process. The use of repetition also creates a sense of urgency and excitement, reflecting the thrill of taking risks and chasing one's desires.

Overall, Come on Mess Me Up is a powerful and introspective song that explores the complexities of human desire and the importance of pushing boundaries in order to truly live.

I basically cried to this song when I was getting myself involved with someone who I knew would break my heart. I still very stupidly got involved and yes, my heart was broken in the end as I predicted, but I can listen to this song now knowing the worst of it is behind me. It still gets me in the "feels", though. Brilliant work Cub Sport.

Like they say...better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all...love doesn't last forever very often...enjoy it while it lasts...be thankful cause love is the best feeling in the world, even if it breaks your heart...
