And The Hazy Sea
Cymbals Eat Guitars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you know how many cities had been built
On the mainland and the trains there
How they'd glide over the marshes
And the hazy sea

Carrying business men in starched collar shirts
Who peered out windows that would fog
Faster than you could wipe them, man

Why are there mountains
Then the last fire dies
We rebuild with foundations
Set just slightly higher
On compacted ash and bone
Spiralling skyward at the GWB
Will you take the wheel for a while
I'm suddenly real tired

We two running our course
Your summer version
Was so fresh and fertile emerald green
The wind in your hair
Like wind Russian through the canopy
And I was green too with robust fucked envy

And the way suspension bridges shake

When you're stopped behind trucks
Sailing into 1999

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cymbals Eat Guitars’ “And The Hazy Sea” combine descriptive language with possible commentary on the cycle of progress and destruction. The opening lines set the scene of bustling cities and trains traveling over marshes and a hazy sea, likely referring to the early industrialization of America. The image is personified through the business men in their starched shirts, peering out windows that quickly fog up, suggesting that they are both inside and outside of the new world they are creating. The question “why are there mountains” metaphorically questions the futility of creating something only to have it destroyed, as indicated by the “last fire” dying out. The rebuilding process “on compacted ash and bone” suggests a destructive cycle that endlessly spirals “skyward”, continuing through generations. The singer ultimately acknowledges their own exhaustion, and perhaps desire to escape this cycle, by asking for a reprieve at the end of the verse.

The second part of the song focuses on a more personal relationship (“We two running our course”) that is nonetheless colored by society’s obsession with progress. The singer’s envy of a “summer version” described in naturalistic language (“fresh and fertile emerald green”) is contrasted with their own emotional state (“I was green too with robust fucked envy”). The final lines return to the theme of society moving forward, and the feeling of being shaken by it all even when stopped on the bridge of time (sailing into 1999).

10 years later and cymbals still eat guitars. I would not be who I am today without this heaven sent band. And the hazy sea....

Memories... one of the most beautiful songs I've ever listened <3

TheNumberOneGuyDude

I remember being 16 when this song came out and it kinda took over the indie scene, well, what was left of it since indie was on its way out the door. These guys wrote a few great albums after this that nobody cares about. They're also really good live, saw 'em twice.

Bellissima Punk

Remember I saw them live at Pukkelpop, awesome band, I wish they are still making and playing music

Dash & Blast

Haven't really been following all the band members but the Empty Country s/t is really good if you haven't checked it out.
