dälek's music is dark, noisy and atmospheric, equally inspired by industrial music like Einstürzende Neubauten, the layered noise of My Bloody Valentine and the dense sound collages of Public Enemy. Their sound is often constructed through sampling and a musical base atypical of most hip-hop, making it difficult for people to classify their sound. They have been described as trip hop, glitch-hop, and metal-shoegaze-hip-hop, as well as criticized for their broad range of sound.
MC dälek described the group's music to the Chicago Sun-Times:
“It's purely hiphop, in the purest sense. If you listen to what hiphop has historically been, it was all about digging in different crates and finding different sounds, and finding different influences to create. If Afrika Bambaataa wasn't influenced by Kraftwerk, we wouldn't have 'Planet Rock'. So, in that sense, what we do is strictly hiphop.”
“If there is a difference, it's that the palette of sounds we work with is more varied than what has been called hiphop in the last 10 years. Somehow, as hiphop grew, it's been put into this box. I think it's funny when people are like "That's not hiphop. It's this and this and this." You can try to rationalize it as whatever you want to rationalize it as."

Eyes to Form Shadows
Dälek Lyrics

Our people's been assassinated by our own blind
Balance bullets off last vertebrae
yo gunshots and lyrics if well aimed will reverberate
There's no escape
Your false Jesus promised lies
I'm... serenaded by sincere tears often
The honest only work to afford wooden coffins
This d‰lek I speak is forever bred in basements
Complacent eyes are the only witness to my changes
Abrasive words slurred with obtuse thought
Caught by the few who do watch
But lost on these blocks.
chorus:
Breath below gravel
Eyes to form shadows
Despair always ample
Structure's unraveled
Breath below gravel
Eyes to form shadows
Head's nod
But we still living shackled
2. Ample time to sleep once this vein's collapse
Clasp hands in vain attempt to prey upon victims
Asked for incisions to sever chest from mind
Designed from remnants of nightmares broke in sections
Blessings can't save designated slaves
Only answer that remains to subvert whole system
All systems fail
But it's patience that has failed
As our patriarchy's jailed to provide veiled income
None listen I speak with pierced larynx
Addicts move in slow increments within granite
Hands bound and damaged are weapons we brandish
Deemed savage by masses
When this anger's just average.
chorus:
Breath below gravel
Eyes to form shadows
Despair always ample
Structure's unraveled
Breath below gravel
Eyes to form shadows
Head's nod
But we still living shackled
Bridge:
That pathetic premise of freedom is false
Futility of earthly flesh answers death's solemn call
Within these very words lie my ancestral tongue
I kept breath within collapsed left lung
As I witnessed modern tower of Babel come undone
These bloodshot eyes surmise that most meaning is lost.
3. Lost paradise rots
Vacant lots breed riots
Few men defiant as we tread 'mongst giants
Filthy air of liar fills lung of young lions
Pierced flesh of Mayan bleeds words on papyrus
Desires blurred in tortured minds of the pious
None stand as righteous when judged through this iris
Skin marked by man's iron
Weighted souls wake when well tired
The unsuspected conspire
Brunt smoke from pyre fills night's sky
Should we attempt to walk on water since we all crucified?
These questions denied
Answers just lies
Sanctify history from hands of blind scribes.
chorus:
Breath below gravel
Eyes to form shadows
Despair always ample
Structure's unraveled
Breath below gravel
Eyes to form shadows
Head's nod
But we still living shackled
The lyrics in dälek’s “Eyes to Form Shadows” painting a picture of a society in decline, where people have been assassinated by their own blindness in regards to social injustice. The first verse describes the futility of violence as a means of change, suggesting that words and lyrics can be more effective as they have the potential to provoke thought and inspire action. The second verse continues with the theme of social collapse, discussing the failure of the system and the need for defiance in order to subvert the status quo. The bridge delves deeper into the issue of the loss of culture and the individual struggles of one who has witnessed this loss in action. The final verse speaks on the quiet desperation of oppressed people, surrounded by giants and filled with desires that cannot be achieved. The song ends on a somber note with the realization that history is often written by those who turn a blind eye to the struggles of others.
Overall, the lyrics in “Eyes to Form Shadows” are a powerful commentary on the state of society, particularly in relation to issues of systemic oppression and social decay. Through the use of vivid descriptions and wordplay, the listener is encouraged to consider the ways in which they themselves may be complicit in perpetuating these issues, and to find ways to tread their own path towards positive change.
