They released their self-titled debut album, D-Cru in 2000. The album featured their biggest hit, the ballad "I Will Be Waiting", a top-ten hit in Canada. The album's other main single on the Canadian charts (reaching number 11) was "Show Me", which sampled the chorus from the song "Show Me the Way", which was originally a hit for Mackenzie's old group The West End Girls in 1991.
D-Cru band member Craig Smart later contributed back-up vocals on two tracks for Master P's album, "Game Face".
They received a Juno Award nomination in 2001 for Best R&B/Soul Recording for "I Will Be Waiting".

In D-Cru's "I Wanna Be There," the lyrics express the desire for individuals to carve out their own unique identity instead of just fitting into pre-existing molds or societal roles. The repeated refrain "I don't wanna be just like you, I wanna be me me" is a powerful statement of individuality and the importance of being true to oneself.
The song's verses provide a list of potential occupations or roles that the singer could pursue, indicating that there are many different paths to take in life. From a police officer or postman to a doctor or city official, the possibilities are endless. However, regardless of what path the singer may choose, the message remains the same -- they want to be themselves and not simply conform to expectations or societal pressures.
Overall, the song offers a hopeful message that embracing one's unique identity and following one's passions is more important than adhering to societal norms or expectations. The upbeat tempo and catchy chorus make for an uplifting and empowering anthem for anyone striving to be true to themselves.
