I need my money, nigga
Been goin' down, hit the ground
I ain't stop runnin', nigga
I need a break, tryna wait
They say it's comin', nigga, hold on
Been too long
Up in arms, runnin' wild
And all they say is, "Hopefully" (all they say is, "Hopefully")
Soon everything will turn around, 'round
Another day, another dollar to make
They never listen to a thing that we say anyway
Spent all my time and money makin' mistakes
Now I'm behind on peace of mind, I just might run away
Life ain't always left up to what we decide
Some days it takes a little more to survive
So we just drink and get high
That's how we get by
So we just drink and get high
That's how we get by
How three-four times a week I breathe
And reach up into the stars elemental (elemental)
I be goin' hard with a pencil (pencil)
If money was a car it's a rental (it's a rental)
How before times when we could breathe on beats
And deliver heart to they mental
Stuck up in the box like a bento (bento)
Don't really give a fuck what you into
You got to do that work, boy
Fuck the world, lift up that skirt, boy
Before you do make sure she look at you
And say, "Please, proceed, you better make it hurt, boy"
Otherwise you gon' sever ties with your dreams
Struggle rhymes with your demons
Slave at work and then wait for the weekend
So we just drink and get high (that's why we drink and get high)
That's how we get by
So we just drink and get high
That's how we get by
Need a lil' more than a lil' bit
Work so hard just to work harder
I ain't got sleep in like three-four days
Tryna make life easy for my daughter
So I meditate, they medicate
Do what we gotta to elevate
Anxiety high, I can't catch a break, stop
Still feelin' I'm not where I'm supposed to be (not where I'm supposed to be)
Up in arms, runnin' wild
And all they say is, "Hopefully" (all they say is, "Hopefully")
Soon everything will turn around, 'round
Another day, another dollar to make
They never listen to a thing that we say anyway
Spent all my time and money makin' mistakes
Now I'm behind on peace of mind, I just might run away
Life ain't always left up to what we decide
Some days it takes a little more to survive
So we just drink and get high
That's how we get by
So we just drink and get high
That's how we get by
So we just drink and get high
That's how we get by
In D-Loc's song "Get By," the lyrics depict the struggles of a person trying to make ends meet and deal with the difficulties of life. The first verse mentions bills piling up, the need for money, and the constant struggle to keep up. The person references the feeling of not being where they are supposed to be and the hope that everything will turn around soon. The chorus highlights the coping mechanism of drinking and getting high to get through the struggles of life.
The second verse talks about the pressure to work hard and make a living for the sake of family, specifically the person's daughter. The line "Life ain't always left up to what we decide" emphasizes the notion that life can be unpredictable, and sometimes one must rely on vices to cope. The lyrics also reference the pursuit of creative endeavors, such as writing with a pencil and making music, as a form of escape from reality.
The song's overall message is the reality that life is tough, and it can be challenging to make it through each day. Coping with life's difficulties can manifest itself in different ways, such as drinking and getting high, or pursuing creative outlets. The song is honest in its depiction of the struggles of the person, and how they deal with them.
