I was not able to smell or taste anything for 2 weeks after I was tested positive for covid. During those two weeks, I did steaming daily and also took Vitamin C and Zinc tablets which were really effective. During the third week, I was able to smell strong smelling substances like deo, nail polish, camphor, etc and I got my smell and taste back gradually. It's been a month now and both my senses have been restored back to normal. I can smell and taste 100% now 😊 . Wishing everybody a speedy recovery 😁

@Milah Meyamii believe it or not, she actually caught COVID again recently at a church camp and lost her taste for a couple of days and once her taste came back she was able to smell again. Initially back in January 2021 we tried everything. We saw two ENT doctors and nothing worked. I honestly believe it's just time. Nerves regenerate slowly for some people.

@Milah Meyamii I definitely will! You at least have something to work with. Keep using the oils at least twice a day. My daughter would never stay consistent with her smell training. If she had, maybe it would have come back sooner. The fact that you can get a whiff sometimes is a very promising sign.

Just to spread some positivity, I lost my taste and smell from Covid and I would have literal anxiety attacks because I was reading so much negative commentary about people not getting theirs back. Mine came back faintly after 10 days...and each day it got better. It’s been a month and I can say I’m back at about 80%. BE PATIENT. I promise you’ll be okay.
Also, if you have prolonged loss of smell, visit an ENT doctor. Covid gave me a sinus infection and I had no idea. And it was blocking all my senses. Once I got the right medication, it all came back very quickly.

Drink water, take zinc and vitamin D. And again, patience is key! ☺️

@Giovanni Salvatierra Wow, yours is taking a long time. I was able to smell a bit after one week though I had to keep the thing really close to my nose and inhale deep. I didn't do any extra olfactory training other than trying to smell my daily food items and snacks. We have few pungent exotic food, and the smell from those were the first to touch my smell cells.
Please try the olfactory practices suggested here by Doc. Also, just try out those with pungent (but not harmful) smells by keeping the item close to your nose.

When I lost both my sense of smell and taste last April, I wasn't even panicked, I remained calm and waited and Believed that it would comeback, I drink a cup of hot water with ginger and lemon every morning and before going to bed, I eat a lot of vegetables and I was so motivated in getting it back, I don't look at the people around me who are eating deliciously and just mind about my business. And after doing that for 8 consecutive days, I got mine back again. To everyone still struggling, I know we are in a different situation but believe me It'll comeback in the right time and I feel your pain.

Thank you Dr. Christy. I want to contribute my speedy recovery to you. I'm on Day 11 since my symptoms, and 6 days since I first lost my smell. I want to say at least 50% of it is back. Day by day it gets better. I can smell hints of my Cerave lotion today! and that was my benchmark to full recovery. Cerave is a "scentless" lotion, but there's a certain smell to it, so I knew when I could smell that, then I am close to being recovered.

Tested positive for Covid a week after I had a fever, now on day 10. Little taste and smell. I'm doing the olfactory training. It's exciting to get even a little bit of smell. I'm looking forward to improvements.

It took me 5 months and 2 weeks to regain my sense of taste and smell. The first 3 months I couldn't smell or taste anything. After those 3 months, slowly, my smell and taste started to come back. You need to wait up to 6 months, from what I read, to be sure if it's chronic anosmia. This smell training helped me a lot. You don't really need essential oils, you can use coffee, parfums, lemons, perfume candles etc. I know it's hard, but you need to wait.

I'd say this is a good post. My sister-in-law gave me some little bottles of essential oils that she doesn't want. They're not the ones that you have in the video, they are: mint, lemon, orange, and eucalpytus. Sniffing on those the last few days seems to have helped. My sense of smell seems to be about 25% or so of what it was originally. When I spray an aerosol air-freshener in my bathroom, I get a good whiff and it lasts more than just a second or two, it's a huge improvement from when I started this therapy 2 days ago. When I'd do the air-freshener test on 7/19 (the 1st day I noticed my sense of smell being wiped out), I was getting nothing. I think you should start this smell-therapy ASAP when you notice that your sense of smell is gone, you don't want that ability to atrophy. I'll report back, it seems to be working.

This is so depressing I can barely eat. I can only detect salty, spicy, and sweet things in food but I can't taste flavor. My smell is completely gone as well. I can't even smell strong stuff like perfume, air freshener, and soap. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Don't take smelling and tasting stuff for granted, please. Edit 3: I didn't know this comment would blow up this much and since you guys have been requesting an update a lot, here it is. So I've fully recovered from covid by now obviously but I can tell you guys what happened after the edit. So a few weeks later my smell started getting distorted. I noticed that my fries tasted like metal but I didn't think anything of it. The next day, we had chicken tacos for dinner but while we were making the chicken, the chicken smelt ABSOLUTELY awful, it smelt like chemicals and burning metal and what hurted even worse was that my dad said "doesn't it smell good" and I had to lie. I wanted to cry because I realized that I had Parosmia. I've heard of it and I would've never thought I would get it. So the parosmia lasted for a few months and oranges/orange juice tasted like grass and the other tastes I couldn't even describe because they were so unusual and alien like. I tried to make my parosmia better by sniffing essential oils everyday and trying to get back my normal back, after a few months it was back to normal. I would NEVER wise that disorder on my worst enemy, ITS THE WORST. After the symptoms subsided, I got vaccinated as soon as it became available because I was done with this BS. And for all of you going through COVID/parosmia, it will get better.

Same thing that goes with me, I can taste sweet, salty, and spicy, but I can't feel the savory of the food. Probably it's because, I don't have any sense of smell. I tried smelling and tasting and there was no problem tasting any food at all, only the smell. I tried smelling things with strong odor such as perfume, soap, and cinnamon and could barely sense any of them. I pray that it would recover easily.

I can only “feel” the sensation of spicy foods but nothing else. No taste or smell. So I’m adding jalapeños on whatever I eat lol but I also feel a bit depressed and I’m starting to feel like I don’t want to eat. But I’m also taking this other approach where I’m encouraging myself to eat nutritious and healthy foods since I can’t taste or smell because that will help my immune system.

My sense of smell was completely lost when I was reported covid positive, my whole family had recovered smell sense in around 15 days, but it took 3.5 months for me to get back my sense of smell, guys losing sense of smell is an extreme curse that also affected my appetite.
Recently I've noticed that still my left nostril is very less prone to sensing smell on the other hand it's alright with the right nostril, shit I'm so confused what went wrong. Although I am enjoying food and fragrances to the fullest but it would have been much better with both of my nostrils.

I had COVID-19 at the beginning of July. I lost my taste and smell for what felt like forever but I eventually gained it back after a little over 3 weeks of not having it at all. For anyone who’s scared that theirs won’t come back, just know that you’re not alone and it will most likely come back, you just have to give it time! We’re all in this together! <3

Lost my taste and smell a few days ago y'all. Read up on some stuff with Essential Oils but I am mainly keeping my vitamin c, d, zinc, tumeric, ginger, and smoothies inside of me. Make sure y'all are doing this daily and you will be okay. I know it sucks so bad not to be motivated to eat anything due to your blessings being taken from you but we will get them back. Be sure to get plenty of rest and use aromatherapy as this doctor said even if you need the airwick airbourne release to do so. Love you all

I didn’t realize I had Covid until I was cooking and couldn’t smell the food. That was back in January. I can smell mildly, but most everything smells and taste like burnt garlic. I can’t smell anything unless it’s up close and it still doesn’t smell the same. I sure hope it goes back to normal. This is a little depressing to think it could possibly stay this way forever. Hopefully we all get our senses back.

Don’t loose hopes everyone. My sense of smell came back after 6 days. I took multi-vitamins to beef up my system. I did nasal rinse, nasal spray and steaming for my nose. I also did the olfactory training for 3 days before regaining my smell back. I am beyond happy. It was a complete horrible experience to loose something so valuable but was taken for granted. I got diagnosed with coronavirus about three weeks ago. My smell and taste completely went away and it was very scary but they have both came back. Still not fully. I’d say about 70-80% but i just wanted to let everyone know who is scared that it will be okay! Sarah Hammond i woke up one morning and I felt really tired and abnormally fatigued. Then the next day I got a really bad headache which was very odd because I never get headaches. And then that night I had a really bad fever and I had cold sweats while I was sleeping. Then on the third day my body was still really sore and I still had a headache but the fever wasn’t bad. And then by day four I only had a slight headache but everything else started to feel better. And probably after five days I felt totally normal again besides the loss of my smell and taste. If I hadn’t lost my sense of smell and taste it would have felt like a bad cold but losing my smell and taste is what made me get tested because that’s never happened to me. That was the scariest part

Thank you! I lost my sense of smell on Day 8 of my symptoms. I could still taste honey, but most of my other tastes were minimal and distorted. I immediately began sniffing things. My deodorant, soap, shampoo, candles, lemon, any food. My nasal passages were clear, but my sinuses were stuffy. Then I began using warm compresses on my face. Every morning I would take a hot bath and spray a mist of nasal saline in my nose. I then decided to try steam. So this morning I took a long, hot steamy shower, spraying the water directly against my face and across my nose. Afterwards, I used nasal saline spray. About two hours later as I was roasting vegetables I had a sudden urge to blow my nose. Finally there was production and it seemed to open up my sinuses more. My nose has been so dry, this was the first time feeling things loosening up in the sinuses. After blowing my nose, I immediately opened the oven and had a WHIFF of roasting veggies! I was so thrilled! I could faintly smell! I couldn't believe my sense of smell was returning after three days! I will continue with steamy showers, saline spray, and smelling lots of different smells to keep my sense of smell going!! I also feel for anyone going through this. It is very scary to lose a sense--smell or taste. I hope you find relief soon, too!

This loss of taste/smell can happen with an ordinary cold & flu also, it is about your olfactory sense becoming swamped with congestion, so doing things to clear your head helps, steam therapy, eucalyptus. Walking in the fresh air : I wish you the best, hang on and your senses will recover.

Lost my smell and taste a year and two months ago after Covid. Still don’t have them back, and now my sense of smell is so distorted that everything stinks. Foods I used to love smell nauseating to me now. I just bought VaporRub and clove oil this week and started putting it in my nostrils to try to mask the odors. Happy to report that I got mine back after losing it for 3 days. I did the smell training and used xlear nasal spray every 4 hrs came back within a day of doing this routine. I also sniffed everything around the house spices, soaps, lotions.

@Jennifer I used both Xlear and Vicks Sinex saline nasal sprays, but any kind of saline nasal sprays should work. I used the sprays several times a day sometimes even 8 -10 times a day. My ENT told me it is perfectly safe to use saline nasal sprays even upto 10-15 times a day.

I lost my sense of smell and taste and was sooo scared because I would read so many comments from people who hadn’t gotten it back in months or even years. But I went and bought some essential oils. I got a lemon, peppermint, and oregano bottle. Even when I couldn’t smell a thing I would take a whiff of each one every day. I SLOWLY started gaining my smell back (takes much patience). And I tell you what that oregano essential oil is very strong and was SOOO helpful. The lemon and peppermint were much softer scents than the oregano. I’ve gained most of my smell back, I wouldn’t say it’s at 100% but it’s better than nothing! I can now smell all three and I can taste most all foods. I’d say just keep going. If it just barely happened to you I would suggest getting right on it!

I tested positive for COVID a week before Christmas and I have yet to regain my sense of taste and smell. I’ve been told by my doctor that it’s not uncommon to experience symptoms long after the diagnosis. I thought that my senses were coming back but now they are almost entirely gone. If/when I regain my senses, I will never take them for granted. I miss tasting food and smelling dinner cooking.

Life update: My smell is still bad. :( I was able to pick up REALLY strong scents like something burning but if the air around me was too stuffy or too cold I wouldn't be able to smell anything. I've developed a new symptom where occasionally the smell would be sour and unpleasant. I took showers when this happened and still smelled the sour smell. I would ask my brother to see if he smelled the same strong sour scent I was smelling and he would say that there wasn't anything unpleasant in the air at all, just the smell of food on the stove that was cooking, but nothing more. Life has been dreadful :(

It’s been a little over 6 months for me. I had no smell for about 4 months until I bought a smell training kit off Amazon and started using it twice a day. And now about 50% of things have a smell. And when I do smell these things it’s a nasty & nauseating smell that I’ve never smelled prior to COVID. And everything I can smell all smells the same. Weird thing is I still can’t smell foul odors at all. And things that I use to love to smell, smell horrible. At first the only thing I found comfort in eating was sweets because it tasted the most normal. Now I can’t stand eating sweets. The smell I now smell is so bad I would rather not smell at all. I just want to be back to normal. I took my smelling senses for granted. I’m feeling very anxious. I just hope and pray my smell will eventually return to normal.

Everyone stay calm!! I lost my smell and taste for over a month. Like I could literally not smell or taste anything. After 2 weeks I could taste salty/bitter. All of a sudden I could smell certain things, very faintly at first. Had to convince myself it just wasn’t in my head. Hey guys I just recovered from this I had no taste and smell for 5 days but I was positive the whole time ik sometimes it’s just so frustrating to eat food without tasting its actual Flavours. So what I did was I took steam 2 times a day and used to eat oranges as after eating them I atleast had some taste and sleep a lot thats what I did and I was not suffering from covid I think I had common cold. I lost my sense of smell before and now it has returned. Last go round it took me 6 months to be fully restored. I am depressed and on the verge of tears most days from not being able to enjoy the smell and taste of things but I know this will pass. I do have some success with olfactory training when I use eucalyptus or lemon oils for about 5 minutes each day.

I lost my sense of taste and smell for 10 days after getting sick with what I believe was Covid in December 2019. I am currently recovering from Covid again and this time it happens very gradually, I’m on day 6 of complete loss of my sense of smell. Fingers crossed it comes back!

I just lost my taste and smell a couple of days ago along with all this fever and sickness. I can’t taste smell not the sweeter nor sourest thing and it’s so annoying!! I really hope that this comes back. It’s been about a week and I still can’t smell or taste.

I've also lost mine and it took like 2 weeks before I can taste and smell again... The first day I feel like my eyes are sore and I kept having headaches, in the second day that's where my body heats up and it felt like my whole body is sore the headaches is present too and it feels like I've had a fever but on the fourth day is where I lost my sense of smell and taste, it was horrible and scary, worrying about if my senses are coming back or not... But I'm very glad it did came back in just 2 Weeks, hope everyone stays safe and if ever you lost yours, please take care of yourself, buy vitamin c and drink lemon or calamansi juices everyday, also go buy some delicious meals so that it can boost your appetite to eat... Praying for you all to get yours back and don't lose hope :)

my first time encountering losing one sense; my sense of smell. i was taking stuff for granted until i've realized how much these senses have been affecting my life up until today. now that i can't smell anything(and i hope it's temporary) the air feels a bit more bland. i can't smell the coffee that i loved, the air when the food is getting ready. i feel depressed, and i don't want anymore people to ever experience something like this.

@Mahari Bri’yan it's been 1 week now; i can smell a bit although the thing needs to have a strong odour for me to smell. as for the rest, i still can't. although as days go by i'm getting a bit stable mentally. thank's for the concern tho

I Am Who I Am yeah indeed this shit is scary, some people even lost their sense of taste along with their smell, i wonder how bad does it actually affect someone's life. although i wont even wish for me to get it im already getting depressed just by losing my smell bruh

To share my experience with you guys: I was feeling absolutely nothing for 7 days. Then, it started to get back, gradually, very slowly though. It took 6-7 weeks in total to be restored fully. I'm 25

It’s been almost 6 months since I lost my actual sense of taste and smell after getting covid. I would say It came back like 40% but wasn’t the same as before. I’m still hoping it’ll come back fully.

Thank you so much Doctor! I just ordered the essential oils. I haven't had a sense of taste or small for 4-5 months. I had Covid-19 in April 2020. And I've felt great and even then my Covid case was mild I was back to normal in about 2 weeks. I don't think I had a 2nd case either. I'll try to remember to come back and let you know how this is working...... thanks :)

Lost my sense of smell and taste 4 days ago.. really difficult and depressing. But I’m trying to keep my head up. You really don’t realize how important smelling and tasting is until it’s completely gone. I feel in the dark without taste or smell. There’s absolutely nothing there when I try to smell something or taste something.. it’s scary. But I know it will come back. I’ll try to update this post when I get it back. I know it’ll come back but it’s so hard In the meantime. It’s hard to eat. God made me realize how lucky I was to taste and smell and I won’t take it for granted again

This just goes to show how much we need every part of our bodies to function because i really wish i can fully smell again & tip stay away from detergent it really worsens your ability to smell 🥺

Dang I didn’t know so many people are going through this. I haven’t been able to smell or taste for two weeks now. I tested positive for COVID last Sunday and found out that this was a symptom of it. Back in March I couldn’t taste or smell and I got tested and it came back negative,and my ability to taste and smell came back the very next day. But this is the longest it’s been going now,it sucks but I been calm about it. Just going with the flow,I wonder what it is though. My nose doesn’t feel stuffed at all I can breathe just fine.

Edit: I lost my taste and smell January 17th, still no smell (except for occasional random smells of fish or rotten egg.) and my taste was getting better it was very faint. And suddenly these past 2 days my taste has changed where most foods taste very unpleasant idk how to even describe the taste but it’s gross and not how things are supposed to taste. So now I’m worried that I won’t ever get my smell and taste back to normal. Sadly I’m beginning to forget what a lot of things smell and taste like 😭

I’ve had no smell since December. It’s weird, now I pick up scent but it’s neutral and nothing like what I am smelling. I’ve a weird taste in my mouth. I know it’ll return. People stay positive, you’re acting as if you lost all your limbs!!! Be grateful you’re here and have the rest of your senses. Be positive!!!
