Mindless
D. Carter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

I wake up
And I've been sleeping on the floor again
I'm lying
In a pool of my own sweat
And I don't know
How I ever got here
Dehydrated
So I grab a bottle of water from the fridge and I'm still
16 years later
I'm still stuck inside of this room
It fucking feels like torture and theres nothing I can do
Wake up to reality
Wake up
Wake up
You've been all alone
Wake up
Wake up
I've come to the realisation that I may have lost my mind
There's too many words in my head but I don't know what ones to find
There's nothing going on but I'm fine
There's nothing going on in my mind
16 years later
I'm still stuck inside of this room
It fucking feels like torture and there's nothing I can do
Wake up to reality
Wake up
Wake up
You've been all alone
Wake up
Wake up
I just wanna get high
So I forget every life
Is there anything going on inside
Do I really just enjoy it
Is it just my life
16 years later
I'm still stuck inside of this room
It fucking feels like torture and theres nothing I can do
Wake up to reality
Wake up
Wake up
You've been all alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of D. Carter's song "Mindless" depict a sense of desolation and entrapment that the singer feels within their own mind. The repeated motif of waking up on the floor in a state of physical discomfort symbolizes a disconnection from reality and a sense of disorientation. The imagery of lying in a pool of sweat suggests a deep sense of unease and discomfort, emphasizing the physical and emotional toll that this mental state is taking on the singer.

The mention of being dehydrated and grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge can be seen as a metaphor for seeking some semblance of clarity or relief in a situation that feels overwhelmingly suffocating. The repetition of being stuck inside a room for 16 years conveys a feeling of being trapped in a cycle of negative thoughts and emotions, unable to break free from this self-imposed confinement.

The chorus's plea to "wake up to reality" and the repeated exhortation to "wake up" can be interpreted as a call to snap out of this state of numbness and detachment. The singer acknowledges the possibility of having lost their mind and feeling overwhelmed by the barrage of conflicting thoughts that plague them. The admission that there is nothing going on in their mind encapsulates a sense of emptiness and a lack of clarity in their thoughts.

The desire to escape through getting high and forgetting about life highlights a coping mechanism to numb the pain and confusion that the singer is experiencing. The final repetition of "wake up" serves as a stark reminder of the need to confront reality and break free from the mental prison that has been constructed. Overall, the lyrics of "Mindless" delve into themes of isolation, confusion, and the struggle to find clarity and purpose in a mind that feels lost and adrift.
