My family had a funeral home years ago, we never disrespected anyone's family . I remember several occasions where the person passed with no family, so nobody came . They had everything prearranged. Some funeral homes would of just took shortcuts . We all along with the staff were her family . We were present . Everyone deserves to be laid to rest with prayers and respect .

What was so hurtful? They must be aware of if a person is heavy or not because they have to carry them out and back into the back area, stating that she is heavy is nothing more than a fact for their job. When my mother was buried, I stayed behind and watched the funeral home close and then seal her casket. Then I stayed behind and watched them lower her casket in the plot and begin to cover it with dirt. I've never seen all those steps before, that was my closure, that her body is resting well. So I say stay behind folks and get YOUR closure.

We did the same although they wouldn't let us stay right up on the lowering the casket in the ground,we had to watch from a distance but still could see everything and after in the ground we were able to go back closer as they were covering the casket..

i thought it was common for people to see through that the loved ones is actually interred. but i know a few morticians they have caustic jokes on the deceased for days , i was troubled by what i heard. they all told me if they didn't have strong bones they would absorb the pain of every family.

we left and came back just in time to see the grave diggers from the funeral home pull my grandfather back from the ground to take his jewelry, mementos that my mom left, and his Army Military Medals. the funeral home talked so much religious bullshit, that we became suspicious. funeral people are all about money. open casket at the gravesite with the dirty motherfuckers picking my grandfather like vultures. pro tip: hide the shovels if you don't want to get hysterically beaten with them. the last time the sun shone on my grandfather, he was being robbed.

Grave diggers are most the time employed by the cemetery not the funeral home!! That being said the funeral director in charge should've stayed there until the burial had been completed. Most funeral directors are reputable and would NEVER allow this to happen

Either way it’s disrespectful and a disgrace, however, I work in healthcare and sometimes comments are made that seem harmless to the person making them but could be translated disrespectful if heard by family but I don’t anyone would go as far as getting an attorney for handlers stating she was heavy. There’s more to the story and the husband probably don’t want the comments repeated while he is still trying to offer her what dignity her memory has left.

Would you find it funny if your loved one's doctor was doing surgery on them and was making rude remarks because they thought nobody could hear? "It's a job" for a reason. If we just wanted it to be cold and callous, we'd leave human bodies out at the curbside to be taken to the dump. Funeral directing is a twofold job, speaking from experience. It's about maintaining proper sanitation and legal procedures for disposing of a body, but it's also about giving dignity and closure to the deceased and their loved ones. If you think it's "just a job", then there's this fun little company in Europe that has made a 2-in-1 catchall "death pod" that looks like something out of a Black Mirror episode, or that place in California experimenting with "human compost". There are urban planning committees in North America that want to tear down cemeteries to build high-rise condominiums and shopping malls, too. Because you know, the OP is right, there's just no respect for the dead or their families anymore. So maybe what happened in this case is totally appropriate in the world we live in now.

I used to be a hospice nurse and I always treated my patients with dignity after death. I would clean them up, straighten their clothes, comb their hair, remove and tubing because they were still my patients until they were picked up. After staying with the bodies until the funeral homes picked them up, the treatment of their bodies that I saw from the many different funeral homes were so despicable.

To the commentors, when a person has lost someone close to them, it means everything in the world to them to hear your comforting words of sorrow felt for them. It just does. Even if you are actually there at that person's funeral with their grieving family. I feel bad for this family. I'm sure it may have been an oversight on someone's part and sad they had to hear what they heard, but it doesn't dimiss the integrity and professionalism the funeral home is to service to that family. It's enough to have to deal with the lose a loved one but then to have to deal with the disrespect of your loved ones death on top of the grief should not be. I pray for emotional healing and peace for her husband, their children and their family. Years ago when working as a vet tech, we had a new hire drop a large Labrador into our freezer. We had just euthanized the old boy in front of his entire human family. The new employee and I were placing the dog into our freezer when he just let go and half the dog hit the bottom as I struggled to keep him from crashing down completely. I was beyond furious and ripped into the assistant with everything I had. I told him that the family in the waiting room were still mourning their beloved companion of 16 years and the dog wasn't even cold yet. I told him if I EVER caught him showing such blatant disrespect for a living being that had just passed, he would be standing in the unemployment line. I still remember the look on his face as if a lightbulb went on after reprimanding him. The concept of respect for the dead seemed to be something his parents failed to teach him, but I can assure you, he learned the lesson in that moment. More people need to be taught to not only respect the living, but also the dead.

Note to all: Always have a designated family member to sit at the grave site until the body is lowered and the casket is fully buried. Had a scam happen in my city were the funeral home was dumping the body out of the casket into the grave then re-selling the casket.

They see the same thing everyday. They get to where it isn't such a heartbreaking thing. They become desensitized. Cops go through the same thing. A dead prostitute was someones daughter, someones sister and someones granddaughter, but she's just another dead hooker, a crime victim to the cops, one of a hundred they've seen that year. Same with Emergency Medical Techs, they roll up on scenes that would make me vomit, but they've seen it hundreds of times already so it's business as usual. Everyone is that way in some respect. People don't mean much to you if they aren't in your group. Everyday, someone dies, gets shot, raped, starves to death etc. Do you cry everyday for these people?
Do you know how many funerals these people cater to in a year? After awhile the people who were full of love and life a month ago are now just meat bags that have to be put in the ground. It's the way things are.

Also, people should know that, at least in my state, you can send a body right to a crematorium (is that the right word?) without involving a funeral home. You can then pick the ashes up yourselves, have a family potluck at the park, and save thousands of dollars. There are also "green" cemeteries where the family dresses/wraps/prepares the body as they wish, no casket is used, the family digs the hole in a wooded or prairie type area, and do the burial themselves. No embalming fluid poisoning the ground, no casket and concrete being buried, lots of money saved. No headstones. I would rather my remaining loved ones take the money and go on a trip somewhere or something than to spend it on my shell. I won't need it any more.

I’d be careful about taking your ashes home I went to a swapmeet 2 weeks ago and bought a beautiful statue and I always loved it so i bought it for 23 dollars when I came home I washed it and placed it sideways to dry with the fan on the table for 2 days out of curiosity I asked my son to google the price for me turns out he comes out of his room and says mom where did you get this ? And I said at the swapmeet he said it’s an urn I couldn’t believe it . It costs 799.00 plus tax so my husband and I took it downstairs to the garage to further investigate to see if it was or had ashes so it has 4 screws at the bottom and sure enough it was super heavy gallon size bag so then I called my brother that worked for a cremation place and he said it’s probably just sand to keep the statue from falling so we pulled the bag out a tad bit more and sure enough there was a tag with a number where the person was cremated we right away called it we closed so we called the police and they said they would take the ashes and dispose of them properly first we said yes then called back and told them that the following day we would take them to the cremation place to return them maybe they could find a family member so we did go and they wanted nothing to do with the ashes they said once the person gets cremated they give them to the funeral home do we offered to pay to buy a spot a niche they said no so we were very sad the lady told us this happens all the time so we were driving home and we had also called the church and as we were driving feeling very saddened and the secretary at the parish said to simply spread the ashes in our garden I said ok but my husband would not have it. So I called the church back and asked if I could bury the ashes on the church garden and they said absolutely so with my Bible in hand we said a prayer for the soul of the person to be at peace then we read psalm 26 and then we placed the ashes in the ground with water to follow to make sure they soaked in then we said more prayer and as we were almost to the bottom of the ashes on the ground there was a name it was a lady we were burying so we said our goodbyes and placed flowers and we left. It was as if we were burying a loved one . So lesson here don’t take your ashes home. They end up in storage and all they do if they buy the storage crate is dump the ashes in the trash🙈

No one can tell a grieving family how to feel about their loved ones, therefore, you have to be careful what you say. Some jobs require you to be professional at all times, even when the customer is not in your presence. I worked for many years as a nurse and different clinics and hospitals and if I could tell you some of the things doctors would say about patients when they were asleep, put under before surgery or a procedure, and even after the patient had left, is mindboggling. I never saw any of it funny, the dignity and respect of a patient should be carried out at all times even when they are not present. If you are standing on the side of the funeral home you may think their remarks were ok, apart of the norm but standing on the other side the deceased family may not see it that way, it may come across as offensive, that is why it is very imperative, in certain jobs, you be professional even when no one is watching, a man's integrity is weighed when there is no one around.
