I learned something new just now! This works in Serato but I'm sure there's a workaround in RB too. You have to use both loop and beat jump functions to make a perfect 3/4 loop.

1. Create a 2 beat loop
2. On the Loops tab, click "OUT" to set a new loop out point
3. Beat jump 1 beat

You should see the loop extended into a 3/4 beat loop and it should be pretty accurate given that the track's beatgrid is set properly. No need to do extreme math :D

I've done this a few times on tracks of my own. At the club, it's a little different though.

Due to the large amount of song requests, and them ranging from 70-180 bpm pretty frequently, I usually let the song either stop completely and time the intro of the other song.
or
1.Hot cue a song at a certain point and start it there at end of previous song.
2. Hot cue songs with impactful beginnings and press that hot cue a few times before letting it play out, good example is "Just a lil bit" by 50 cent.
The transition can happen from any speed prior, as long as I tempo that beginning with my hot cue presses.

I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about, but being so new, I figure this would be awesome for someone else that reads it! I'm learning constantly about DDJ800 and rekordbox, so right now is best time to spit out everything I"m coming across! :D

7/8 = 87,5%
9/10 = 90%
Etc.
Correct me if im wrong haha. Always grabbed my attention how it would be possible to loop things out of the 3/5/9 Bars scheme!

For serato, I wonder if another technique would be to just save a 3/4 loop to the track itself so you can use FX on it, and don't have to worry about making the loop perfectly each time.

i was showing a friend how to do something like this recently, but you did it a lot fancier, i just found tracks that had just the right rhythms to pull it off, noticed that 129 was 3/4 of 172, and timed exactly when to hit play and just did a simple beatmatch that was a polyrhythm. works ok if you have tracks that feature tripplet rhythms in them, but the way you did it was cleaaan

I remember discovering the syncopated triplets thing back when I was playing with pitched amen breakbeats on a sampler, and it blew my mind how it worked perfectly if you play two copies of the sample with the same number of keys between them on the keyboard. Music is math!❤

@@Wasaasa1 Seems to depend a bit how much "stuff" there is on the track. More gate cuts the signal/beat faster. Noticed that on the old Traktor, I can't add any reverb after activating the Beatmasher 2. I can only add it before, so no way to manipulate it. Though not sure if it's possible with multiple effects on a bank (or whatever it's called), as I currently use only 2 FX's units. I use some ancient version from 2013-2014.

I love this trick, been using it for years.
I've always known it as the Einstein transition cos it uses math.
Can be a bit of a hassle on Rekordbox or Serato but with VDJ or CDJs are generally much easier to 'lock it in' 😜

This again shows me that selecting Serato as my software of choice might have been the wrong decision for me.
I‘m using the DDJ1000SRT and have fallen in love with the in-mixer roll effect (Edit: after checking, it turns out that the in-mixer effect jumps from 1 to 1/2, so I‘ll have to use the workaround ☹️) - when I was playing with a Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX, I was struggling to recreate the same Effect on it, that the DDJ1000SRT simply had built in…
Edit: then again, with the Stems that came with Serato 3.0 you can now have an a capella on the fly which will create additional opportunities to transition 😆

Serato actually offers another great way of getting a similar effect: You can tap the tempo of FX, e.g. of en echo. When one track is playing, pre-hear the new track and tap the tempo of it (I mapped a button for that). Then add the echo fx to your playing track with full feedback. It will continue echoing in the tapped tempo, which is basically the bpm of the new song. Then just fade. I wish other DJ software would also offer this option.

Could also do this while using the Roll Effect on Stand Alone Pioneer systems I believe. However rekordbox (On the effect track where echo, reverb, spiral etc are located also has no option for 3/4 timing, which is quite weird because other effects such as echo do have the 3/4 timing option. Anyway this video came right in time, I was actually figuring this out a while ago by accident, but couldn't fully figure out how to redo it. I was already convinced it should be possible to mix weird jumps like these, however I was trying out to mix from 100 to 150, which I am still convinced is possible. But your 3/4 or 0.75 maths is spot on and a nice trick to know.

@DJ Carlo @jessejoeyjames I just spent a few hours trying to figure this out on pioneer ddj 1000srt and serato dj pro 3.0 - I don't pay subscription for my serato as I bought it outright a while back and it seems this doesn't come with the looper internal fx. Anyway, the closest i could replicate this where it sounded somewhat useable with hiphop and r&b tracks was to use the hardware spiral effect on the ddj1000srt at 3/4 on the bit of the track I wanted to loop. As I have stems for serato, i could then spiral the particular bit of the song in acap to make the spiral loop as clean as possible but then you lose a lot of vocal after a while and it's just spiral noise but in the new bpm that you then match with the incoming song. This is a bit of effort and doesn't sound as clean as a simple 3/4 loop of the actual track but it is still somewhat useable for some transitions. If anyone has a better solution to replicate the trick in this video using ddj1000srt and serato 3.0 without the looper fx, please let me know😭

This is an amazing trick. It works with a loop timing of ‘1T’ (triplets) in the opposite way. Same principle for why you can mix harmonically across dominant and subdominant keys. Complimentary frequency ratios, big and small!

Great video! Trying find a workaround for my DJM-S9 because it doesn’t support the “one dot” single fx. I can use 3/4 echo but it’s too fast for most transitions.

Question: Couldnt you also set a 3 beat loop on a house song and then trigger a dnb song? That could bypass having to change any settings and I'd imagine you could do that for any software/controller/cdj, although I am just a rekordbox user for now. I will update this after I test it and I'd appreciate feedback on the topic as I am participating in a DJ battle next week (filled with EDM DJs) and I think this type of technique could be a way to separate from the rest of the "crowd". Edit: also another way to do the formula would be to multiply the first song by 1.5 to find the next songs BPM. My question with that is what if you wanted to do a transition from a DnB song at 170 to a house song at 127.5? Would you have to do a 6/4 beat roll on the first track? Is that even possible lol? Or maybe a 6 beat loop? Let me know please and thank you!

No go the 3 beats! That would ruin the songs flow, as you'll have kick-snare-kick-kick as your drum pattern. Vocals and melody will suffer too.

As for the other way around, multiplying the higher BPM's song by .75 is the formula. Going higher is technically multiplying by 4/3 instead of 3/4 haha

I've been doing this to get from house to hip hop/rap for years, never thought of 3/4 time. Thanks 😊 I have residency that has me play practically everything.. Disco/house/country/rap/hip hop and its fun to blend all that together over a night. Makes it a challenge and I laugh when I mix 2 totally different artists together smoothly. Small bar/nightclubs with an audience that can come right up to the booth and hassle i mean request songs is interesting and sometimes a pain. But can be rewarding. Thanks for the tips 😀

On CDJ's and a DJM you could probably also achieve something similar by setting the BPM of the fx section on the mixer to 174 BPM, then using the roll/delay/echo effect at a certain rate and applying it to the 130 song, then mixing in the 174 song. I will try it out later but I think the BPM's of both songs can be whatever you want it to be, without resorting to using certain ratio's.

if you are just looping a word like in this video, harmonic matching isn't crucial, but you could also take it a step further and adjust the key live during the loop in increments to match the next track. It would actually be a pretty cool effect maybe with a bit of reverb in you DJ software or AIR if you have access to VSTs if you are routing through a DAW.
Maybe another video of tricks to use to transition two far away keys would be cool.

You can also cut a 1 beat loop and treat it as a dotted quarter note in a track 1.5x the current BPM.
80 bpm / 2/3 = 120 bpm
1 beat at 80 bpm will take the same amount of time as 1.5 beats at 120, giving the feel of 3/2 time and syncing on the 1 every 3,6,9,12 bars of the 120 bpm track (8 dotted quarter notes = 12 quarter notes in length).
You can also invert the trick in the video such that a 1.5 beat loop (6/4) at 174 will match a 1 beat loop at 130.5
The easiest way of understanding this is actually just looking at half/double time. A 1 beat loop will play as a half note for a track at half the tempo or an eighth note at double the tempo. If you simply replace the ratio (1/2) with any other ratio, you can establish the same kind of beat division logic - it just sounds better with 3/4 and 3/2 time because people are more psychologically prepared to hear those time signatures.

This is cool. You can do something very similar using a 3 Beat Loop on a vocal or synth ect basically avoid Drums and your good. The Math is way easier also 120 into 180 (120/2=60+120) or for example down 120 to 80(120/3=40(120-40)

I used to do it manually, using the manual loop, it's not as accurate as a fixed 3/4 loop but since you're mixing the next track quickly you just apply the necessary adjustments super quick and exit the loop as soon as possible, once you practice it a bit more it's actually pretty easy

I like the manual method too. The trick would be to have the second track queued in the headphones to help you hit the manual loop on beat of that next song. That way the math doesn’t need to be perfect either as long as the audio sample fits the timing.

My sc6000s also can’t do 3/4, but you can change the quantize settings to quantize to the half beat. Now I can use a manual beat loop with the in/out buttons to get a 3/2 without missing. Works similar to 3/4, just different maths. Maybe other software can do this too.

In VDJ you have the option to pres IN where you want your loop to start, and OUT at the end of the loop. I have a Allen & heath Xone Dx that came with Serato itch. I remember that, in the software, i had this option to manualy creat a 3/4 loop.

While that is true, I find that manually creating a 3/4 loop is very tricky. More often than not, I get it wrong. Every program has the manual loop bit Valentin haha

@DJ Carlo also, in some settings of the dj software, there is a setting that, when you press in and out to automatically set the loop point at the nearest beat.
Another way, and this may be tricky, is to use hotkeys and disable the auto sync. I use this trick when i mix a song with another song that has a variable or no beat to get the sync right.

On turntables you simply cut the power, let it spin down to the new bpm and finger the disc around to match the new drop.

I once asked for bass guitar VSTs because I mostly wanted something to get ideas down. I mentioned I could "kind of play bass, but wasn't good" and that this was more because I had nothing to record my bass with, I wasn't great at bass, AND I was moving around a lot at the time, so I couldn't have my bass at all times.

No one named a single fucking plugin. It was nothing but "you play bass, but want a bass VST? Stupidest thing I've ever heard. Just get good bro."

Like holy fucking shit, I fucking get it, but name a plugin. What kills me is that there are plenty of bass guitar VSTs that sound decent enough to pass in a mix, but these idiots just fixated on the fact I could "kind of play bass."

Hi Carlo. I’m a beginner and I’ve been learning it little by little with all your tutorials. They are very helpful. However, I came a cross a tiny problem. Using serato dj pro software on a pioneer dj mixer. I was navigating my way around the software and messed up my bpm column. I Milo get see the numbers displayed anymore. I’ve removed the bpm and added back on and it still won’t display the numbers on the column. I hope this make sense. Might’ve been I box I checked by mistake on the library and display tab. I’m confused lol. Help

Couldn't you also manually set an auto-looping memory cue in Rekordbox? Freestyling wouldn't be possible, sure, but if you prep your set then it gives you the option to tighten loops too because it's not an effect loop. There is also not the worry of having to precisely time in and out on the fly then too.

As a primarily DNB DJ, I've seen this around a couple times, but this definitely is the most in-depth explanation.

You could always just take the track into some editing software and create the 3/4 loop, then add it to the end of the track. Export the edited file then once loaded in your DJ software add another cuepoint so you can trigger the 3/4 loop whenever you want.

Of course it is much easier if your controller has the 3/4 loop option built in but if it doesn't,
it is still possible with some editing of the file

@DJ Carlo Good point, I'll usually add these extra edits to classics or tracks that have stood the test of time, ones that I still like to drop every now and again.

I haven't actually tried adding this 3/4 loop yet but what i did in the past was, I would add a section of the tracks acapella to the end of the main mix file, if an acapella was available or some kind of fx build up

I use that on CDJ Mode and I click pause right where i want it to 3/4. It doesnt actually 3/4 its almost like a off beat tripplet, but i love it.

I am also using Serato 3.0 however I have a Repeater effect and do not have Looper. License is tied to the hardware, and so I don't have all the expansion effects. Anyhoo, with the Repeater effect you can set the beats, turn on the repeater and adjust the number of repeats. Thanks again for sharing!

When you go from higher bpm to lower bpm you multiply ex. (120)x(.75)=90 bpm you will have to match the song in the song you are playing it shows 80 bpm so you will have to go from that to 90 in the other (174)x(.75)=130.5🎉🎉 its awesome this hack.

For someone like me on DDJ 200 (until the FLX4 support my iPad) you can do this technique by using the Autoloop 1 on the word ‘body’ then just bring the tempo from that slowly in line with the drum and bass track. A quick simple way for people on DDJ 200’s (if any)🫵😅

It’s not even a big hassle to do the math if you don’t have a high end equipment, it’s not like you’re going to do that same transition the entire set. Maybe once or twice per gig, absolutely worth doing the math 😂

Tbh, learning how to eventually in/out the loop is better all around as a base skill set. I'd suggest practicing because the ability to tap a rhythm is very helpful for every DJ. I think Carlo would def agree. Love the vid dude!

Multiplying the BPM using those fractions will give you your answer! And in terms of production, probably creating different flows and odd time signatures to create unique songs! I believe some prog metal bands use the 7/8 time signature
