Turn Back The Clock
DJ Yoda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another day is ended
And I still can't sleep
Remembering my yesterdays
I begin to weep
If I could have it over
Live my life again
I wouldn't change a single day
[Chorus]
I wish that I could turn back the clock
Bring the wheels of time to a stop
Back to the days when life was so much better

Lying here in silence
Picture in my hand
Of a boy I still resemble
But I no longer understand
And as the tears run freely
How I realize they were the best years of my life

[Chorus]

You might say it's just
A case of giving up
No
But without these memories where is the love
Where is the love

If I could have it over
Live my life again
I wouldn't change a single day

[Chorus]

Why can't I turn back the clock
Bring the wheels of time to a stop
Back to the days
Oh no no
I remember when
Life was so good
I'd go back I'd I could
Oh oh I wouldn't change a single day
Don't let the memories slip away

I wouldn't change a single day
Don't let the memories slip away

Overall Meaning

The song "Turn Back the Clock" by DJ Yoda is a deeply sentimental and contemplative track. The lyrics express a sense of nostalgia for a time in the past and a longing to relive certain memories. The singer is haunted by his inability to sleep and is overwhelmed by emotions as he thinks about his past. The opening lines establish the theme of insomnia and the weight of memory. The singer's inability to sleep is a result of the memories that he carries with him. He is shown remembering his yesterdays and beginning to weep.

The chorus is a plea to turn back time and to bring back the days when life was so much better. The singer is consumed by a desire to relive the good times. The second verse of the song, tells us about the singer's longing for his lost youth. He has a picture of himself as a boy that he identifies with, but he no longer understands who he was or what he felt at that time. He is brought to tears as he realizes that those years were the best years of his life. The memory of those golden times is what he clings to in the present.

The final verse of the song disavows any kind of nihilism as the singer says that the memories that he carries with him are essential to his life. The lyrics declare that without those memories, there can be no love. The song ends on a note of longing and remembrance, with the singer expressing his desire to relive the good times and to hold on to those memories.

This was (is) amazing, but I’m not sure about the second claim.

DJ Spinbad: Rock the Casbah (The 80s Megamix) from 1995 is a big influence for Yoda.

Before this album you also had ‘As heard on radio Soulwax Part 2’ (2001) as well as the Evolution Control Committee (1994), DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist with Brainfreeze (1999), DJ Qbert mixes from the early 90s (e.g Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Musik), Mr Dibbs (Turntable Scientifics) is another that sticks in the mind.

Going back farther you have Double Dee and Steinski: The Lesson (1985), along with Buchanan and Goodman working in the 1950s, which are all working in the same vein.

No disrespect to the album or Yoda, but my recollection was its part of a much wider movement at the time.

Bought this album in 2003, on vacation in England and wandering Brighton on my own. Stopped into a record shop and it caught my eye. For the longest time I felt like the only American other than MC Paul Barman who knew Yoda. This album is still sick, it expanded my musical horizons for miles and miles.
