I do what I got to do
When I walk through the streets I see all sorts
of faces
Some familiar some I never seen they all
all got traces

"Chemicals" by DMVU delves into the world of addiction and drug abuse, as the lyrics examine the consequences of succumbing to the lure of a drug deal in order to satisfy one's needs. The opening lines of "When the loot come through, I do what I got to do" indicate that the singer will do anything to acquire the substance he deems necessary. The song also references the different faces one may encounter while living in a drug-infested neighborhood, some recognizable and some not. Despite the fact that the singer is willing to do whatever it takes to get their fix, they are still constantly surrounded by a changing cast of characters. This creates a sense of fear and uncertainty, as the listener is left wondering what sort of people are living next door.
Moreover, DMVU's song "Chemicals" also highlights the use of addictive drugs and their ability to provide temporary escape from the realities of life, regardless of the costs. The line "When I walk through the streets I see all sorts of faces, some familiar, some I never seen they all got traces," puts into perspective the various harmful impacts that drug abuse can have on one's life, such as social disconnection, memory loss, and general decreased quality of life. This is a powerful song that serves as a cautionary tale for those who may be tempted to abuse drugs.
