Caruso
Dalla/De Gregori Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Poi all'improvviso uscì una lacrima
Confondono i pensieri
Così diventa tutto piccolo
Anche le notti là in America
Ti volti e vedi la tua vita
Come la scia di un'elica
Ma sì, è la vita che finisce
Ma lui non ci pensò poi tanto
Anzi si sentiva già felice
E ricominciò il suo canto
Te voglio bene assaje
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
È una catena ormai
E scioglie il sangue dint' 'e vene sai
Te voglio bene assaje
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
È una catena ormai
E scioglie il sangue dint' 'e vene sai
The lyrics to "Caruso" by Dalla/De Gregori tell the story of a man who is reminiscing about a past love while standing on an old terrace overlooking the Gulf of Sorrento. The man and the girl have just embraced after she had been crying, and as he clears his throat, he begins to sing. The song expresses the deep love he feels for her, a love that has become an unbreakable chain and runs through his veins.
As he sings, he sees the lights in the middle of the sea and remembers his nights in America. However, he realizes that what he sees are only the lights of the lamps reflected in the wake of a propeller, not the America he longed for. The pain he feels in the music becomes overwhelming, and he gets up from the piano. But when he sees the moon emerging from behind a cloud, he feels that even death would be sweeter. In the girl's eyes, as green as the sea, he sees a tear, and he believes he is drowning in it.
The power of music and lyrics is highlighted, where each drama can be a facade, brought to life by makeup and gestures. The man reflects on how two eyes looking at you, so close and genuine, make you forget words and confuse thoughts. The world becomes small, even the nights in America. As he turns around, he sees his life unraveling like the wake of a propeller. But instead of dwelling on the fact that life eventually ends, he embraces his fate and starts his song again.

La Donna Cannone... such a beautiful song! I discovered this song while learning Italian last week and I keep going back to it, even though I only understand a few words of the song. But the soul of the song can be felt even without understanding the words, through his words and the music. And how much Italians love him! With much love from a Russian American who is falling in love with Italian language.
@UTJK.
@angelonunziata3778
Capolavoro!
