Jurado's solo career began during the mid-1990s, releasing lo-fi folk based recordings on his own cassette-only label, Casa Recordings, beginning in 1995.
Jurado often makes use of found-sound and field-recording techniques, and has experimented with different forms of tape recordings. In 2000 he released Postcards and Audio Letters, a collection of found audio letters and fragments that he had found from sources such as thrift store tape players and answering machines. Also released in 2000 was Ghost of David,, Jurado's bleakest and most personal sounding record to date. I Break Chairs, (2002) was produced by long time friend, David Bazan. It was his last album for Sub Pop, and was a much rockier, electric affair. After signing for the Indiana-based label Secretly Canadian, Damien Jurado reverted to his trademark folk ballad-based style, releasing six more albums: Where Shall You Take Me? (2003), On My Way To Absence (2005), And Now That I'm In Your Shadow (2006), Caught in the Trees (2008), Saint Bartlett (2010) and Maraqopa (2012).

Texas to Ohio
Damien Jurado Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This is the way we planned our escape
Five miles of road, three hours of conversation
My feet and ears could only take so much
From Texas to Ohio is too long a walk
Even if it's with someone you love
Five miles in the walk you already want to do them in
Through the heat and humidity
Reminds you of going back to the first time I met you
How each time we're dating I could never get ahold of you
I don't know what you're saying
You should try calling back tomorrow
From the window to the threshold
This is the way we learn from our mistakes
You leave all your friends for someone you think you love
Through for the better or the worst
My mind's just going back to the first time I met you
How each ~ you're dating I could never get a hold of you
I don't know where she's at
You should try calling back tomorrow
The song "Texas to Ohio" by Damien Jurado is a piece that exudes a sense of longing and regret, both in the lyrics and the melancholic melody. It tells the story of an attempted escape with a loved one, where the singer and his companion make a plan to leave their current situation behind but quickly realize that the journey is far from easy. The lines "Five miles of road, three hours of conversation, my feet and ears could only take so much" express the strain and exhaustion of the journey both physically and mentally. The distance between Texas and Ohio is emphasized as being too far to walk, even with someone you love, and the heat and humidity make the journey even more challenging.
The song touches on a relationship that is strained and on the verge of breaking. The singer reflects on the beginning of the relationship, when everything was new and exciting, and how difficult it was to get a hold of his partner at the time. This nostalgia and longing for the past adds a layer of melancholy to the song, as the current situation seems far from ideal. When he sings "You leave all your friends for someone you think you love," it's clear that the relationship has taken its toll on both the singer and his partner.
In conclusion, "Texas to Ohio" is a poignant and emotionally charged song that tells the story of a couple trying to escape their current situation but quickly realizing that running away doesn't solve all their problems. Rather, it highlights the distance that has grown between them and the difficulties of relationships, even with someone you love.
