Older Chests
Damien Rice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Older chests reveal themselves
Like a crack in a wall
Starting small, and grow in time
And we always seem to need the help
Of someone else
To mend that shelf
Too many books
Read me your favorite line

Papa went to other lands
And he found someone who understands
The ticking, and the western man's need to cry
He came back the other day, you know
Some things in life may change
And some things
They stay the same

Like time, there's always time
On my mind
So pass me by, I'll be fine
Just give me time

Older gents sit on the fence
With their cap in hand
Looking grand
They watch their city change
Children scream, or so it seems,
Louder than before
Out of doors, and into stores with bigger names
Mama tried to wash their faces
But these kids they lost their graces
And daddy lost at the races too many times

She broke down the other day, yeah you know
Some things in life may change
But some things they stay the same

Like time, there's always time
On my mind
So pass me by, I'll be fine
Just give me time
Time, there's always time
On my mind

Pass me by, I'll be fine
Just give me time

Overall Meaning

The song opens with the metaphor of "older chests" revealing themselves like a crack in a wall, starting small and growing over time. The imagery invokes the idea of aging, and how we all eventually face the reality of mortality. However, the song suggests that we do not have to go through life's changes alone; we always seem to need the help of someone else to mend that shelf, to make it through the tough times. The request to "read me your favorite line" suggests a desire for shared human experience and connection, to feel less alone in the world.

The second verse tells a story about a father going to other lands and finding someone who understands the ticking and the western man's need to cry. This implies a sense of emotional distance or repression that the father and the singer both experience. The father returns, and some things in life may change, but some things stay the same. The song suggests that we can never escape time's march, but we can find comfort in the thought that some things, such as love and connection, endure.

The third verse paints a picture of older men (perhaps the singer and his father) on the fence with their caps in hand, looking grand but watching the city change. The children scream louder than before; they have traded the outdoors for bigger stores with bigger names, losing their innocence in the process. The mother tries to wash their faces, but the kids have lost their graces, and the father has lost at the races too many times. This verse captures the feeling of nostalgia and longing for a simpler time; a time when life was less complicated and more innocent.

At this time in my life, this song has never hurt me more than it does now... I still remember when I discovered Damien's music. I was 16, and staying at a relative's house, people i hardly knew.. but over the first summer i grew very fond of the people, the environment, and the house. It was quite lonely despite the family i had all around. Anyway, winter had come, and it was mid November. I was sitting in my room with a hot cup of hazelnut flavoured coffee, i came across his My Favourite Faded Fantasy and... Man was i mesmerized. So i was sat there listening and i just felt everything at once through each track. Love, loss, despair, hope. It was magical. Then over time i found O and 9. Those two years i spent at that house, that room, on the grass, the roads, the weather rough and clear, lonely, but safe, I listened to his songs. Then i left from there. I thought I'd be okay.. Now another 2 years passed, choices made, opportunities missed. Still trying to find a way.... Ps. Sorry for the long moaping story. Just want to share how dear i hold Damien's music. So thank you Damien Rice.
