Safe
Dan Bull Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've hungered enough for the humblest stuff
From running the country to just someone to love
But enough is enough, I'm done with the world
So I'll succumb and return us to the substance we come from
We see bubbles above the submarine
As I plunge us deep, three-hundred leagues under the sea
There's a feeling of release as as our feelings are released
And we feel immediately at peace
It's less easy to see as the light fades
And my face is emblazoned with night's shade
I wait as the sides of the ride shake
And vibrate like they're portraying my mindstate
I'm inside, safe, encased in a cocoon
But soon it'll take my life away
But I made the choice to die today
So I may aswell enjoy the ride

Man, you are spoiled and you've
Thrown your toys out the pram
It's these moments of silliness
That spoil it for every two one

No longer am I looking into the sky
I'm seeing into your eye

Overall Meaning

In Dan Bull's song Safe, the artist expresses a deep sense of disillusionment with the world and a desire to escape its troubles. He has "hungered enough for the humblest stuff," from political power to romantic love, but has found neither to be fulfilling. He decides to take drastic action by "plung[ing] us deep, three-hundred leagues under the sea," returning us to the "substance we come from." This submarine journey is a metaphor for a journey of self-discovery and a rejection of societal norms and pressures.

As the journey progresses, the artist describes a feeling of release and peace. The darkness and isolation of the deep sea are juxtaposed with this sense of calm, representing a duality between the chaos of the world above and the tranquility of inner reflection. The shaking and vibrating of the cocoon-like submarine represent the turmoil and uncertainty that come with this type of journey, but the artist ultimately accepts his fate and chooses to "enjoy the ride."

This is the first album I ever listened to in full in one sitting, back when I was just 14 years old. Now I'm 19 and I'm a huge music buff. This is the album that set me on my path. Thank you, Dan. The bait and switch the lyrics take on the track Cut blew my mind when I first heard it and every time I hear that song it takes me back.
