Sometimes When We Touch
Dan Hill Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you 'til I die
'Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you 'til the fear in me subsides
Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you 'til I die
'Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you 'til the fear in me subsides
At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly
At times I understand you
And I know how hard you've tried
I've watched while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by
At times I think we're drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you 'til I die
'Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you 'til the fear in me subsides
Dan Hill’s song “Sometimes When We Touch” is a ballad that is widely loved and respected for its emotional depth and sentimental meaning. The song is an expression of love, but not the idealized type of love that is often depicted in popular culture. The lyrics speak to the complexity of love and relationships, and the feelings of uncertainty and vulnerability that can arise when we open ourselves up to another person.
The first stanza sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer begins by admitting that he struggles to express his feelings honestly, even when asked outright about them. He would rather hurt his partner with the truth than mislead them with a lie. He acknowledges that he is not in a position to judge his partner, but still finds it challenging to be completely open and honest.
The second stanza delves deeper into the singer’s insecurities and fears. He is a writer, which suggests that perhaps he expresses himself more comfortably through his art than in personal interactions. He compares himself to a prize-fighter, still trapped in his youth, grappling with his authenticity. Despite his fear and uncertainty, he longs to hold his partner until they both break down and cry.
The third and final stanza is perhaps the most complex. The singer admits to some darker emotions – that there are times when he wants to break his partner down and reduce them to their knees. However, he also recognizes that he loves them deeply and wants to hold them endlessly. He knows how hard they try and how much they are driven by love. The song ends on a note of hope, with the recognition that we are all still searching for someone who will stand by us and accompany us on our journey through life.
Overall, “Sometimes When We Touch” is a powerful and nuanced depiction of love in all its complexity – the joy and the pain, the vulnerability and the courage.

You inquire about my love for you
And I choke on my reply

Instead of deceiving you with a falsehood
For who am I to judge you
Who am I to criticize you
In what you say or do
For your actions or words
I'm only just beginning
I'm just starting
To see the real you
To truly understand you
And sometimes when we touch
Occasionally when we make contact
The honesty's too much
The sincerity becomes too intense
And I have to close my eyes
I must shut my eyes
And hide
And conceal my feelings
I want to hold you till I die
I wish to embrace you until I die
Till we both break down and cry
Until we both shed tears of emotion
I want to hold you till the fear in me subsides
I desire to embrace you until my anxiety fades
Romance's an honest strategy
Loving someone is a truthful tactic
Leaves me grappling with my pride
Leaves me struggling with my self-importance
But through the years of maturity
As I grow older
Some tenderness survives
Some affection endures
I'm just another writer
I'm simply a writer
Still trapped within my truth
Still confined by my reality
A hesitant prize-fighter
A cautious fighter
Still trapped within my youth
Still confined by my youthfulness
At times I'd like to break you
Sometimes I want to shatter you
And drive you to your knees
And reduce you to subservience
At times I'd like to break through
Other times, I want to overcome the barriers between us
And hold you endlessly
And embrace you without end
At times I understand you
Sometimes, I comprehend you
And I know how hard you try
And I realize how much you struggle
I've watched while love commands you
I've observed as love controls you
And I've watched love pass you by
And I've seen when love eludes you
At times I think we're drifters
Occasionally, I believe we're wandering aimlessly
Still searching for a friend
Still seeking a companion
A brother or a sister
A sibling-like figure
But then the passion flares again
But then the zeal erupts once more

Last night I prayed a prayer.
I ask God to show me my Spiritual life with him.
I dreamt of a tape deck and guess what is was playing?
Each lyric showed my love for him, his love for me and my love for my husband of more than 28 years.
These are powerful lyrics.
I'm still crying now about the lyric drive you to your knees.
Sometimes i'm lukewarm in my walk with Jesus and I need reminding that he loves me more than anyone.
I hope this word has been a blessing.
And to anyone who reads this, I hope you have a wonderful day. 😊
