Robots
Dan Mangan + Blacksmith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm hopin', I'm hopin' that I could be home right now
The feel of the breeze, the smell of the trees under my brow
I'm hopin', I'm hopin' that I could be home right now
Ride on to you

I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out

I'm hopin', I'm hopin' that I could be home right now
Ride on to -

Waitin' around, it's getting too down
I could just sleep right now
Watchin' of the wind hitting the sides from your house

I'm wishin', I'm dreamin' that i could be home right now
Ride on to -

Nothing to do, talking of you
Watching the world spin around
Waiting in the cars, making it far into the crowd
I'm hopin', I'm hopin' that I could be home right now
Ride on to you

I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out

I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out

I'm wishing', dreamin', hopin' that I could be home right now
Ride on to you

Late into the evening
I'm checking the time
Checking the time
Checking the time
I'm waiting on you

I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin' out
I hear you callin out
I hear you callin' out

I hear you callin' out

Overall Meaning

The song "Robots" by Dan Mangan + Blacksmith is a reminder of what it feels like to long for home. The lyrics describe the desire to be in a familiar place, which is accompanied by the sensation of the wind and the aroma of the trees. The singer of the song is waiting and hoping to return home, as he watches the world go by, feeling helpless and disconnected from his surroundings. But he is not alone; the person he misses is also calling out to him. The repetition of the line "I hear you calling out" connects the two people and their yearning for one another.

The song creates a sense of emotional vulnerability; the lyrics suggest that the individual is holding back their emotions until they can be returned to their comfortable space surrounded by loved ones. The theme of the song, longing for home, is relatable to many people, and it evokes a sense of nostalgia and comfort. The line "I'm waiting on you" ends the song in a way that almost seems to suggest that the piece is unfinished, and that there is more to come in the future.

I remember hearing this when I was younger. It always caught me as a song that exuded "happiness." A song that, despite some of the lyrics, really struck optimism and a better future.

I don't know what happened to that more innocent younger self, but this song takes me back. Even as I sit here, buried in work, dealing with all the pains of adult life... this puts a smile on my face.

So thanks to everyone who made this little corner possible :)
