Where
Dan Potthast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where's Teddy
You should be by your friend
Where are you now?
Are you sitting down?
Where's Teddy?
You should be by your friends
If if's and but's were candy and nuts you'd be here for one more year
Why can't I tie a tie anymore?
What's gone wrong?
My hands were stuck for so long to the steering wheel
You can't do what
Without the what
You don't think
Just react
Why can't I answer the phone anymore?
What's gone wrong? my hands were stuck for so long to the steering wheel
Seven out of ten
Eight out of ten
Nine out of ten
Good shot

Here's your 50 cents
Good luck

Overall Meaning

The song "Where's Teddy" by Dan Potthast seems to be a recognition of a lost friendship or connection. The repetition of the question β€œWhere’s Teddy?” throughout the song implies that the singer is looking for someone who used to be a close friend or someone they were connected with in some way. The line β€œYou should be by your friends” shows that there is a feeling of longing for that connection, as the singer believes Teddy should be with his friends, but is not.

The lines "If if's and but's were candy and nuts you'd be here for one more year" suggest that there might be some regret or missed opportunities between the singer and Teddy. The line speaks to the idea that if things were different, Teddy would still be around for another year. The line β€œWhy can’t I tie a tie anymore?” and β€œWhy can’t I answer the phone anymore?” express a sense of helplessness and confusion, emphasizing that something has gone wrong for the singer.

The line β€œSeven out of ten, eight out of ten, nine out of ten, good shot, here’s your 50 cents, good luck” might be a reference to a carnival game or some type of competition. The line suggests that Teddy was good at it and may have won a prize. The theme of longing for connection and regret of missed opportunities runs throughout the song, and the singer's questions convey a sense of confusion and loss.

Love the stuff off of "Eyeballs!" There's also a "Hedgecore" joke to be made about the background action at 0:18, but I'm too lazy.
