Muscle Memory
Dananananaykroyd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Not for the first time
Blood on the gym floor
Arcs like a rainbow round
Not so appalling
To wring my own neck
Names on the gauze; absent

Play along
'Cause I know the chords, muscle memory
Play along
'Cause I know the chords, muscle memory

Wisdom
Is clumsy
Enlightened
By stereo evangelists listen
To decode
So badly
The meanings in allegory
Take what seems to get you down
And follow misinterpretations

Play along
'Cause I know the chords, muscle memory
Play along
'Cause I know the chords, muscle memory

Gracious
But casual
Hang on
To every word transmitted from playlists
And albums
Just knowing
The fawning is just secondary
Left inhibitions at the door
Regrets are met with open arms

Play along
'Cause I know the chords
Play along
Muscle memory

You'd like me better if I liked you less

Clumsy
And awkward
In public
You spill around in stationary motion
Seasick
From speaking
The morals of your influence
Limbs cast fondly to the sea
Remember who you used to be?

Play along
'Cause I know the chords, muscle memory

Play along
'Cause I know the chords, muscle memory

Overall Meaning

The song "Muscle Memory" by Dananananaykroyd contains lyrics that may seem nonsensical at first glance, but upon closer inspection reveal a much deeper meaning. The opening lines, "Not for the first time, blood on the gym floor, arcs like a rainbow round," sound violent and disturbing, but can be interpreted as a metaphor for the physical toll of long-term dedication to a craft. The singer implies that he has been practicing so hard for so long that he has physically injured himself, but he finds some sort of twisted beauty in it. He goes on to describe the power of muscle memory, or the way that practicing something repeatedly ingrains it in the mind and body to the point that it can be done effortlessly.

The chorus repeats the phrase "play along, 'cause I know the chords, muscle memory," which could be interpreted literally as a reference to playing an instrument, or figuratively as a statement about the power of routine and repetition in all areas of life. The second verse delves into the concept of wisdom and the way that it is often conveyed through music. The "stereo evangelists" mentioned here are likely musicians or music critics who are seen as bringing enlightened perspectives through their work. However, the singer recognizes that these perspectives can be difficult to fully understand, leading to "misinterpretations" and "decode(d)" messages.

The final verse explores the process of personal growth and change, with the singer asking the listener to remember who they used to be before undergoing a transformation. The lines "you'd like me better if I liked you less" suggest that changing oneself to match the desires of others can be tempting but ultimately undesirable. Overall, the song seems to be about the complexities of personal growth, the power of repetition, and the way that music can be a powerful conduit for conveying important messages.

I wasn't expecting actual talent when I came across them. I thought, oh another parody band...but then I realized this is pure brilliance. Ode to ya boys. I supported y'all with what I could...sorry not enough people did, I feel like the world could use this music now more than ever....god speed..

they broke up because they are disillusioned with the music industry, because their 'fans' come and see them and fill venues wherever they went but didn't buy the album. You can't keep going without money. I asked them at the gig I went to and that's the answer I got. I was wearing a Pizza College shirt that came with their album and they were like 'oh look someone who actually bought an album...' such a shame. What a band.

petehasplans when they announced their farewell tour they didn’t have a Welsh date on it so I complained via MySpace and said that I hope that you enjoyed all the money that I wasted on your music. One of them replied saying that they had bought a gold plated swimming pool. A few days later they announced a Cardiff show and told me to bring my wallet, I met them afterwards and they signed an autograph for me with thanks for the swimming pool in the middle in big black letters.

This video makes me both happy and sad. Happy that a band so amazing existed...and sad that it was so short-lived. RIP Dananananaykroyd.
