Drive
Daniel H. Pink Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw you
I stood right there before you
And i knew this was right
When your eyes crossed mine
This is who we are
Driving recklessly fast in your car
No we don’t need no breaks
We’ve gone too far
On the road that seems
Like it's our own highway to future
Our future
Staring at you now i see
I have no way out
Every single time we meet
I loose all my control
Out of my mind
But when it all comes crashing down
Will you stick around with me?
This is who we are
Driving recklessly fast in your car
No we don’t need no breaks
'Cause that’s just how we are
Every single day
When i close my eyes
I hear you say
We’re young and beautiful
No we will never get old
Its you and me
Can you promise me
That we will stay forever young
Forever young
Staring at you now i see
I have no way out
Every single time we meet
I loose all my control
Out of my mind
But when it all comes crashing down
Will you stick around with me
Every single day
When i close my eyes
I hear you say
We’re young and beautiful
No we will never get old
Staring at you now i see
I have no way out
Every single time we meet
I loose all my control
Out of my mind

But when it all comes crashing down
Will you stick around with me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Daniel H. Pink's song Drive convey a sense of reckless-yet-intense passion and a desire to hold onto youth and beauty for as long as possible. The song's protagonist is enamored with someone they've met, and the two of them are driving fast and free down a road that feels like it belongs to them. The singer, however, is aware that this feeling of invincibility won't last forever, and their fear of losing control and losing their partner weighs heavy on them.

Despite this fear, the singer seems to be wholly consumed by their desire for this person and their shared, youthful rebellion. By the end of the song, the singer is begging their partner to promise that they'll "stay forever young." It's a sentiment that captures the essence of the song's theme: a fear of mortality and an overwhelming urge to live life to its fullest while youth and beauty still last.

Overall, Drive is a passionate love letter to the freedom, beauty, and reckless abandon of youth. Through its lyrics, it captures the feeling of being young and in love, consumed by a desire to make the most of every moment before it's too late.

How about studying why the hell banks and often governments reward failure?

RBS bank made £8 billion in losses, they want to hand out 200% bonuses.

The home office here in the UK had poor performance, they handed out £6.5 million in bonuses.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the whole point of a bonus was to reward success. To motivate people to meet performance targets by offering them a cash incentive. What is with all the rewards for failure?

RBS says they have to attract the best talent with cash incentives if they're going to get back on their feet. Well it's quite clear that isn't working, given how badly they are doing despite all the money they're throwing at "talent".

Working together on something for a purpose (other than just making profit) is awesome. People love to work but they hate to do useless work.

I love the musical analogy. I spend endless time pursuing mastery in jazz (I've started a little too late) and I think am a better business person for it. Being able to work in a close knit ensemble, taking clues from workmates, bandmates, and being able to pivot to various and creative ideas is useful. Plus it's fun. It's fun to do fun things. As John Coltrane said, "Invest yourself in everything you do. There's fun in being serious."

I have found that musical skill and accomplishment is very correlated with strong engineering talent

As an aspiring entrepreneur this talk was invaluable to me the first time I came across it. The whiteboard animation is such a good delivery method. Great stuff. My drive is to help others wherever I can. I have found that this mindset combined with genuine honesty naturally brings people together.
