Lazy Afternoon
Daniel Michaels and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a lazy afternoon
And the beetle bugs are zooming
And the tulip trees are blooming
And there's not another human in view,
But us two
It's a lazy afternoon
And the farmer leaves his reaping
In the meadow cows are sleeping
And the speckled trout stop leaping up stream
As we dream
A fat pink cloud hangs over the hill
Unfolding like a rose
If you hold my hand and sit real still,
You can hear the grass as it grows
It's a hazy afternoon
And I know a place that's quiet, except for daisies running riot

And there's no one passing by it to see
Come spend this lazy afternoon with me

Overall Meaning

The song "Lazy Afternoon" by Daniel Michaels and His Orchestra is a beautiful and dreamy composition that transports the listener to a peaceful and idyllic place where time seems to stand still. The lyrics are an invitation to savor the simple pleasures of life and experience the beauty of nature with a loved one by your side. The first stanza sets the scene for a lazy afternoon where the only living creatures in view are the beetle bugs and the tulip trees in full bloom. The imagery is soothing, and the use of alliteration contributes to the languorous and carefree ambiance of the song.

The second stanza introduces more elements of nature, like the farmer leaving his reaping and the meadow cows sleeping. The speckled trout stop leaping upstream as the couple indulges in a dreamy state, taking in the beauty of their surroundings. The description of the fat pink cloud unfolding like a rose and the sound of grass growing add to the romantic and ethereal atmosphere of the song. In the last stanza, the singer invites their beloved to join them on this lazy afternoon and promises to show them a place that's quiet, except for the daisies "running riot." The invitation is warm and inviting, and the listener can't help but imagine a peaceful afternoon spent in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

I used to listen to this particular song on Muzzac at the bank I worked at as a teenager in 1967 and 1968.  When it would come on I would just stop what I was doing and enjoy this wonderful piece of music.  Later this music began to symbolize my parents to me.  The violin section is my father and the flute is my mother and they are answering each other in a very passionate way.  Now that they are both dead the piece means more to me than ever.

This is the Candlelight and Wine LP from Mood Music for Listening and Relaxation (the American edition), by Reader's Digest. The music was recorded at Walthamstow Town Hall, near London. The room had a very high ceiling, hence the superb sound. I am a great fan of easy listening music, such as this. This Mood Music set is now available on CD from Arazol Music.
