Born in Los Angeles, he entered the film industry in 1976, initially as an actor. He made his film scoring debut in 1980 for the film Forbidden Zone directed by his older brother Richard Elfman. He has since been nominated for four Academy Awards and won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media for Tim Burton's Batman and an Emmy Award for his Desperate Housewives theme. Elfman was honored with the prestigious Richard Kirk award at the 2002 BMI Film and TV Awards. The award is given annually to a composer who has made significant contributions to film and television music.
He is the son of novelist Blossom Elfman and the brother of director Richard Elfman.
Elfman was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Blossom Elfman (née Bernstein), a writer and teacher, and Milton Elfman, a community in the Baldwin Hills area of Los Angeles. He spent much of his time in the local movie theatre, adoring the music of such film composers as Bernard Herrmann and Franz Waxman.
Stating that he hung out with the "band nerds" in high school, he started a ska band. After dropping out of high school, he followed his brother Richard to France, where he performed with Le Grand Magic Circus, an avant-garde musical theater group. Violin in tow, Elfman next journeyed to Africa where he traveled through Ghana, Mali, and Upper Volta, absorbing new musical styles, including the Ghanaian highlife genre which would eventually influence his own music. Elfman contracted malaria during his one-year stay and was often sick. Eventually he returned home to the United States, where he began to take Balinese music lessons at the CalArts. He was never officially a student at the institute, nonetheless, the instructor encouraged him to continue learning. Elfman stated, "He just laughed, and said, 'Sit. Play.' I continued to sit and play for a couple years." At this time, his brother was forming a new musical theater group, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. The group performed the music for Richard's debut feature film, Forbidden Zone. Danny Elfman composed his first score for the film and played the role of Satan. By the time the movie was completed, they had taken the name Oingo Boingo and begun recording and touring as a rock group.
In 1985, Tim Burton and Paul Reubens invited Elfman to write the score for their first feature film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Elfman was apprehensive at first because of his lack of formal training, but with orchestration assistance from Oingo Boingo guitarist and arranger Steve Bartek, he achieved his goal of emulating the mood of such composers as Nino Rota and Bernard Herrmann. In the booklet for the first volume of Music for a Darkened Theatre, Elfman described the first time he heard his music played by a full orchestra as one of the most thrilling experiences of his life.[citation needed] Elfman immediately developed a rapport with Burton and has gone on to score all but two of Burton's major studio releases: Ed Wood, scored by Howard Shore, which was under production while Elfman and Burton were having a fight, and Sweeney Todd, an adaptation of the 1979 Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical. He also, more recently, accompanied Tim Burton in the composition of music for "Almost Alice", the soundtrack for Alice in Wonderland.
Burton has said of his relationship with Elfman: "We don't even have to talk about the music. We don't even have to intellectualize – which is good for both of us, we're both similar that way. We're very lucky to connect" (Breskin, 1997).
In 2021 he released "Big Mess", his first non-soundtrack album since 1984's "So-Lo", which is often considered to rather be an Oingo Boingo album due to the presence of many other band members.
Elfman has three children: Lola, born in 1979; Mali, born in 1984; and Oliver, born in 2005. On November 29, 2003, Elfman married film actress Bridget Fonda. In 1997 he scored A Simple Plan – his only score for one of her films to date (although he did compose a cue for the film Army of Darkness, in which Fonda has a cameo). He is the uncle of actor Bodhi Elfman who is married to actress Jenna Elfman, known most notably in her role as Dharma in the TV series Dharma and Greg.
Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head
Danny Elfman Lyrics

And just like the guy whose feet
Are too big for his bed
Nothing seems to fit
Those raindrops
Are falling on my head
They keep falling.
Talking to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way
He got things done
Sleeping on the job
Those raindrops
Are falling on my head
They keep fallin'
But there's one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me
Won't defeat me, it won't be long
Till happiness
Steps up to greet me
Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes
Will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me 'cause,
I'm never gonna stop the rain
By complaining,
Because I'm free
Nothing's worrying me
It won't be long
Till happiness
Steps up to greet me
Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes
Will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me cause,
I'm never gonna stop the rain
By complaining,
Because I'm free, 'cause nothing's worrying me
The song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" by Danny Elfman is about the feeling of being stuck in a rut and dealing with life's natural obstacles. The lyrics describe the physical discomfort of raindrops falling on someone's head and the inability to find comfort or a solution to the problem. The singer then vents his frustrations to the sun, blaming it for not doing its job in keeping the rain away. He then reflects that despite the rain, he won't let it bring him down, as he knows that happiness will eventually find him.
The song's message is one of resilience and optimism in the face of adversity. Even when things seem to be going wrong, it's important to keep marching forward and not let the rain get you down. The lyrics also imply a certain level of agency and control over one's emotions. The singer acknowledges that while things may be difficult, he has the power to choose not to complain and instead focus on the positive things in his life.
Overall, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" is a timeless song about persevering through tough times, embracing freedom from worry, and maintaining a positive outlook despite the challenges of life.

Raindrops are falling on my head
I am experiencing a rainstorm and the drops are falling on me
And just like the guy whose feet
Similar to a hypothetical person with oversized feet,
Are too big for his bed
I too am faced with an awkward situation where things do not fit well
Nothing seems to fit
It appears that everything in my life doesn't fit or match up properly
Those raindrops
The raindrops that were mentioned earlier
Are falling on my head
Continue to fall on me without interruption
They keep falling.
The rain is still continuing despite my wish for it to halt
So I just did me some
I recently had a conversation with someone
Talking to the sun
The individual with whom I spoke was the sun itself
And I said I didn't like the way
I expressed my disdain for the sun's way of doing things
He got things done
His approach to managing things displeases me
Sleeping on the job
It seems the sun is not working to its full capabilities
But there's one thing I know
Despite this, I have an unwavering conviction
The blues they send to meet me
The negative emotions I experience on a regular basis
Won't defeat me, it won't be long
I will not let these emotions consume me for an extended period of time. A change is imminent
Till happiness
I believe that joy and contentment will eventually be mine
Steps up to greet me
These positive feelings will come to me on their own accord
Raindrops keep falling on my head
The rain persists and continues to fall on me
But that doesn't mean my eyes
However, this doesn't imply that I will start crying or shedding tears
Will soon be turning red
The physical reaction of the body's glands that produce tears will not happen due to the rain
Crying's not for me 'cause,
I don't wish to cry or express my emotions in such a way
I'm never gonna stop the rain
Complaining and lamenting about the rain will not make it go away
By complaining,
I won't be able to make any changes by continually focusing on what's wrong
Because I'm free
I am at liberty to live life without any restrictions
Nothing's worrying me
I am not burdened by any worries or troubles that could hinder my happiness
It won't be long
As previously stated, happiness is approaching
Till happiness
It is only a matter of time until peace and joy will come to pass
Steps up to greet me
As I await the arrival of this happiness, it will come to me instead of me having to seek it out.
Raindrops keep falling on my head
Yet, the rain continues to fall onto my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes
But this does not mean that I must necessarily cry about it
Will soon be turning red
The rain won't make me start crying
Crying's not for me cause,
I am not one to shed tears easily
I'm never gonna stop the rain
The only thing to do is to accept the rain and continue living my life
By complaining,
Focusing on the negatives do not help in any way.
Because I'm free,
I am unconstrained and able to live without fear of judgment
Cause nothing's worrying me
I am carefree and not bothered by anything
