The First Night
Danny Michel & The Benque Players Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met her on the first night
She said I was alright
I met her on a wave lave
And she could fell into my life
And everybody's got the story
Their misery, the glory
River's run dry species die on the glory morning lights
You can bet your whole heart
And put it on the table
Throwin your wrist watch
The deep to your house
Or maybe she'll miss you
Or maybe she'll just dis you
Maybe she'll running high
Or maybe find the lovely with the life

She said don't fly with yourself boy, don't fly with yourself boy
You never cross my mind, you never cross my mind
She said, don't fly with yourself boy, don't fly with yourself boy
You never cross my mind, you never cross my mind

And on and on the sky is turning
The fire's burning we are still learning
All for one and one for all
Our arms are opened, our arms are opened
Uhh

Now woke up sleeping in the end of the day
In the jet lick slumber the sun hit my face
I wanna keep on giving what can I do
I gave my whole heart now she's got two

Now early that same morning
I got the script tick warning
In the eyes of the child I found the truth
Flowers by the road side, those ruthless flood times
If you got a grudge to hold into long road till you better get on your way

I said don't fly to yourself boy, don't fly to yourself boy
I never cross her mind, you never cross her mind
I said don't fly to yourself boy, don't fly to yourself boy
You nearly lost your mind, you nearly lost your mind

And on and on the sky is turning
The fire's burning we are still learning
All for one and one for all
Our arms are opened, our arms are opened

And when the day's off in the days
Lost in my own little knees
Croling the walls my brain to blaze
But from this table for one I see the sun
And here it comes

I met her on the first night
She said I was alright
We set by a seaside and she fell into my life
The spring is sprung streams over flown
Wind blows it's funny how things changes
My how we grow

And on and on the sky is turning
The fire's burning we are still learning
All for one and one for all
Our arms are opened, our arms are opened

And on and on the sky is turning
The fire's burning we are still learning

All for one and one for all
Our arms are opened, our arms are opened

Overall Meaning

"The First Night" is a song about a new beginning, a night where the singer meets someone new and begins to discover the possibilities of life. There is an underlying theme of uncertainty and risk-taking throughout the song. The singer meets this person on a wave and feels like they have fallen into their life. The idea of not knowing what is going to happen, as well as the dichotomy of both misery and glory, is emphasized in the lyrics. The stakes are high, but the potential for "the lovely with the life" makes it worth the risk.

However, the person the singer meets seems to caution against getting too carried away. They remind the singer not to "fly with yourself", not to let their own ego take over. Despite giving their whole heart, it is unclear if this new relationship will be successful, as the person may "just dis you" or "miss you".

The song is reflective, with the singer waking up to find the sun on their face and the memory of the night before still lingering. There is a sense of growth and change as the singer acknowledges how things have changed since that first night. The repetition of "on and on the sky is turning" reinforces the idea of time passing and things evolving, while "our arms are opened" suggests a willingness to embrace whatever comes their way.

Addicted to this song right now.  Love Danny Michel (not as much as my Mom who has a giant crush on him).  He has a great voice & is truly fabulous live.
