Wilde is known for breezy California power pop through his records released in the 1980s and 90's. Catchy hooks and power chords were his hallmark. In the 1980s he landed two minor rock radio hits with "Isn't It Enough" and "Time Runs Wild".
The single "Time Runs Wild" was featured on the soundtrack to the film Dream a Little Dream.
Wilde was the founding member of the now-legendary power-pop band The Quick. Wilde then went on to form Great Buildings in 1981 and released an album. After the band's demise Danny Wilde pursued a solo career. His first solo release in 1986, The Boyfriend, was very successful for Wilde, garnishing 2 pop singles "Isn't It Enough" & "Body To Body". Wilde then released Any Man's Hunger in 1988. It featured popular tracks such as "Time Runs Wild" and "Wouldn't be the First Time", and reached #176 on the U.S. album charts, his only solo album to chart in the United States. The album had moderate success. Wilde followed it with the release of the self-titled album Danny Wilde in 1989. The album contained some of Wilde's most popular songs including "Cut from Stone", "The Long Way Home", and "We Don't Have To Say Goodbye".
But it was in the 1990s that Wilde found major commercial success, forming The Rembrandts with Phil Sōlem. The duo's two biggest hits were "Just The Way It Is Baby" and "I'll Be There for You" the theme from Friends.

And I could close this old bar down
Baby, if it won't be you
Somebody else will bring me 'round
You say there's not enough to gain
Yeah, you've made that all too clear
But I'll be waiting just the same
Set me free
I don't want your sympathy
Leave me to my misery
Baby, set me fee
Morning comes too soon
And my head feels all undone
And in the light I saw the truth
And I had nowhere to run
Bu I'm a mess since you've been gone
I get no company 'round here
The loneliness is far too strong
The pounding of the rain is the only sound I hear, yeah
You gotta set me free
Don't keep my heart in custody
I am not your property
Baby, set me free
Say the word and I'm gone forever
But will your memory still be haunting me?
I only wanted to be, yours forever
Could that be worse than what I'm going through, going through
Well, it's late, the lights are low and I turn on my radio
You can't hush away my tears
It seems the less I see you, the more I need you here
Right here right now
You gotta set me free
Don't keep my heart in custody
I am not your property
You gotta set me free
The lyrics of Danny Wilde's song "Set Me Free" convey the idea of a man who is struggling to deal with a break-up. He is trying to convince his former lover that they should not be together anymore, but he admits that he is still in love with her. He drinks to forget his pain, but he knows that it won't help him in the long run. He says that he needs to be set free because he can't handle the pain of being apart from her anymore. He promises that he won't bother her again if she agrees to let him go.
Despite his plea to set him free, he also acknowledges that he still loves her and that the thought of being without her is painful. He knows that he needs to move on, but he can't help it. He is willing to go away forever if that's what she wants, but he wonders if he will be able to forget her. He says that he only wanted to be hers forever, but now he must face the reality of their situation.
The song is a poignant reflection on the emotions that come with a broken relationship. It's about the struggle to move on while still holding onto hopes of reconciliation. The lyrics are filled with raw honesty and vulnerability, making it a relatable song for anyone who has gone through the pain of a break-up.
