18 Yellow Roses
Darin Bobby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Eighteen yellow roses came today
Eighteen yellow roses in a pretty bouquet
When the boy came to the door
I didn't know what to say
But eighteen yellow roses came today
I opened up the card to see what it said
I couldn't believe my eyes
When I had read
Though you belong to another I love you anyway
Yes eighteen yellow roses came today
I never doubted your love for a minute
I always thought that you would be true
But now this box and the flowers in it
I guess there's nothin' left for me to do
But ask to meet the boy that's done this thing
And find out if he's got plans to buy you a ring
'Cause eighteen yellow roses will wilt and die one day

But a father's love will never fade away
Will never fade away

Overall Meaning

In "18 Yellow Roses," Darin Bobby tells the story of a man who receives a bouquet of eighteen yellow roses from a secret admirer. The singer of the song is shocked and confused by the gift, as he already knows that the person he loves belongs to another. He can't understand why someone would send him such an extravagant gift, even though he feels grateful for the gesture. Despite the confusion, the singer remains steadfast in his love for the woman, even though she is not his to have.

In the second verse, the singer expresses his doubts and fears about losing the person he loves. He says that he never doubted her love for him before, but now he feels uncertain about their future together. He realizes that he may have to compete with other suitors, including the mysterious sender of the eighteen yellow roses. However, he concludes that his love for the woman will never fade, even if the roses eventually wilt and die.

I sang this song at my oldest daughter's wedding. Never got through it EVER without crying.

One of my most precious memories of my childhood is of my Dad dancing in our living room to this song with me in his arms, when I was a little girl. I remember him singing along and smiling as we danced.

When I got a few years older I used to stand on his feet instead, as he danced with me. He's been gone for 36 years now, but I still miss him just as much today, as I did when he passed.
Love you Dad. ❤

My father left this record to my mother, he took off for good, found 2 weeks later shot in his car. I was 2-years-old, only daughter. My 2 brothers, were age 3 & 1.
