Eyes Wide Open
Dark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Remember, when we were happy,
Floats in those cloudless skies,
We swallowed life right down at throat.
On that hill I stand and look into our childhood's past.
I recognized in the sun spot the place we called it paradise.
And one day, you disappeared, without a trace,
No save our soul (S.O.S.) could reach my ears.
We miss you one stand with eyes wide open,
To the place we played with eyes wide open.

Parents tried but no one told me really everything
They all ignored my wondering eyes. What was happening?
Alone now, that's all I felt, in these cold days.
The shadows raped in paradise
The shadow's rhymes.

Remember [x5].
The shadow's rhymes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dark's song "Eyes Wide Open" are quite poignant, as they speak to the loss of childhood innocence and the pain that can come with growing up. The opening lines set the tone, reminding listeners of a time when life seemed simpler and more carefree. However, the reference to "swallowing life right down at throat" hints at a sense of urgency or even desperation, suggesting that even in this idyllic past, there was a sense that something important would be lost if it wasn't savored in the moment.

The second verse shifts the focus to the singer's loss of a loved one, using some powerful imagery to convey the sense of helplessness and despair they feel. The mention of an S.O.S. that couldn't be heard is especially poignant, as it suggests that even when we cry out for help or support, there may be times when we feel utterly alone. The chorus then serves as a sort of tribute to the missing person, with the repeated use of the phrase "Eyes wide open" emphasizing the idea that the singer will never forget their loved one or the impact they had on their life.

The final verse brings the themes of the song together, as the singer reflects on how the loss of their loved one has shattered their childhood paradise and left them feeling alone and uncertain. The mention of "shadow's rhymes" suggests that even in the darkest moments, there is still poetry and beauty to be found, but it also underscores the sense of loss and longing that permeates the song.

LONG LIVE DARK!!! :)
