The ‘Circles’ EP (June 2008) received radio support from the likes of Zane Lowe, Rob da Bank (Radio 1), Mark Radcliffe (Radio 2) and John Kennedy (Xfm), and was featured as experimental Single Of The Month in Mixmag.
Debut album ‘Miracle Kicker’ (October 2008) was co-produced by Robin Proper-Sheppard (The God Machine, Sophia) and showcased the band’s penchant for spine-tingling harmonies, electronic drones, gently picked folksy guitar and huge psychedelic endings.
‘Jealous Enemies’ (September 2008) was Single Of The Week on Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie’s Radio 2 show, and Download of The Week on US iTunes, garnering a fair few sales stateside. ‘Miracle Kicker’ placed at #33 in The Guardian’s Top 50 albums of 2008.
2009 saw more UK touring and a remix EP which featured blissed-out reworkings of ‘Miracle Kicker’ tracks from the likes of US electronic legend Hatchback. In September 2009 the band embarked on a short but successful tour of Germany and Austria in support of Robin Proper-Sheppard’s Sophia. ‘Mid-Session Interval’, the b-side to the original ‘Jealous Enemies’ single release, was also heard soundtracking a Royal Bank of Scotland TV advert.
The band have spent most of 2010 shutting themselves away and working on album number two. Expect gigs and plenty of new material from January 2011 onwards.
Selected press quotes...
'There are countless acts out there weaving folk tinged melodies and circling acoustic guitars with electronic chimes and beats but you'll have to go a long way to hear it done with this level of emotion and originality or with such delicate vocal harmonies'. MixMag (‘Circles’ alt./experimental Single of the Month 6/08)
'Underneath the menace of the bleak (but very tuneful) acoustic guitar/laptop/trumpet battles lurks Dan Carney's occasionally weary tales of quite but definite personal hysteria, all told in a sweet estuary twang...a charming record and one liable to sting you if you're not paying attention'. The Fly Magazine
'A sweetness infuses every song as the vocal harmonies blend over the crisp, acoustic=electric arrangements' Plan B
' ...boasting tuneful acoustic guitar melodies and subtle yet effective trademarked wisping vocals...when you play this CD you often forget it;s actually on but when it finishes one feels slightly alone and you have to put it on again..' Clash Magazine (‘Miracle Kicker’ album of the month 10/08)
'Like a rustic Air adrift in a haze of woozy acoustica, DCLC's debut washes over the listener, the Wicker Man-style soundscapes smothered by multilayered harmonies that sigh with vague unease' Q Magazine
'Nu-folk wannabes are clogging up our arteries at the moment but you can't switch off and miss a gem like this. DCLC specialise in acidy, harmony-drenched acoustics. Lilting like Simon & Garfunkel over ominous guitar picks and swooning strings, it's a delicious face-off between dark and light. If an album's worth of psych-pop-folk meandering sounds too much, just listen to Questions... and beg for more later'. Teletext

Robot Command Centre
Dark Captain Light Captain Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Into something like a robot, we
Will all be proud
With your metal arms
Your metal arms they make me feel like I
Live my life
Too fast
You push yourself too hard
Now you're quieter than a Sunday
Your armies will not march
Now you're quieter than a Sunday
How (are) we meant to feel
If networks have gone down
Ceremony's over
cnd the buildings out of bounds
How (are) we meant to feel
If the sunlight hurts our eyes
Were walking in a straight line
cnd it always leaves us dry
You push yourself too hard
Now you're quieter than a Sunday
Your armies will not march
Now you're quieter than a Sunday
You push yourself too hard
Now you're quieter than a Sunday
Your armies will not march
The song "Robot Command Centre" by Dark Captain Light Captain explores themes of technology, pressure, and the emotional toll it takes on individuals. The lyrics speak to the idea of someone becoming robotic or mechanical in their behavior and the consequences that arise from this transformation.
The opening lines, "If you turn into something like a robot, we will all be proud," suggest a desire or expectation for someone to conform to societal norms or expectations. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for succumbing to the pressures of modern life and becoming emotionless or robotic. The mention of "metal arms" evokes a sense of coldness and detachment, emphasizing the loss of human connection and a fast-paced existence.
The chorus speaks to the aftermath of pushing oneself too hard and losing touch with one's emotions. The comparison to a quiet Sunday implies a sense of stillness and emptiness, a contrast to the busy and demanding nature of modern life. The mention of armies that no longer march signifies a loss of ambition or drive, further emphasizing the toll that excessive pressure can take on a person.
The second verse raises questions about how one is supposed to feel when technology fails and when routines become disrupted. The mention of the sunlight hurting the eyes suggests a hypersensitivity to the world, possibly as a result of being overwhelmed or exhausted. The reference to walking in a straight line that always leaves one dry alludes to a sense of monotony and a lack of fulfillment.

If you turn
If you transform yourself

Become robotic in nature, we
Will all be proud
Will feel a sense of pride
With your metal arms
With your mechanical limbs
Your metal arms they make me feel like I
Your mechanical limbs evoke a feeling in me that I
Live my life
Experience my existence
Too fast
At an accelerated pace
You push yourself too hard
You exert excessive effort
Now you're quieter than a Sunday
Now you are as silent as a peaceful day of rest
Your armies will not march
Your forces will not move forward
How (are) we meant to feel
How are we supposed to experience emotions
If networks have gone down
If communication systems have ceased to function
Ceremony's over
The formalities have concluded
And the buildings out of bounds
And the structures are off-limits
If the sunlight hurts our eyes
If the brightness of the sun is painful for our vision
Were walking in a straight line
We are proceeding in a linear path
And it always leaves us dry
And it consistently leaves us emotionally unfulfilled
