Always found it interesting that according to Chris Avallone that during Van Buren the devs did table top role playing Fallout and found out that the players would always surprise him with their decisions and couldn’t predict what they would do as a DM. He said that helped make the decision to make 3 different ways to finish New Vegas quests.

The Fallout series might be in a good place, the publishers just have to dare again and make Fallout 5 (on newer engines and modern game mechanics) and just make a separate game like the original games with isometric or similar characteristics of the older parts. after all, they basically made mt fallout shelter as a "game" that doesn't need an ego or isometric camera, and that still had its fans. The studios just have to dare more. horrible to see so much potential being wasted.

And I, as a fan, you always ask yourself why, can't a player-oriented person prevail in the company. It's not a bad thing that English companies don't do surveys here in Germany, but in the USA or UK there are just as many fans who have an objective, reasonable awareness of what game series need, why can't you at least ask there or get involved connect people ? Most of the points have already broken out of their crowns anyway, what difference does it make if they turn to your PLAYERS from a REASONABLE and humane way. After all, we are the people who fill their wallets, not the other way around.

I liked it but it didn’t make sense to me I thought van Buren was set a while before the events of the first battle of Hoover dam so I always assumed that If Graham was going to be very different in van Buren then it would mean we likely get to see how evil he truly was while he was a legate in the legion or maybe we see the end of his time in the legion and the beginning of his redemption to god man that would’ve been even cooler to see

Honestly to answer the question of why we like watching these: because watching good stories is just like watching a good Fallout themed movie.

Some of those games, like Sonora - have better stories than most movies out nowadays. While bad mods like this... well, they're like watching a comedy with a commentator making fun of stupid shit and in your case - also talking about the lore, the original ideas and comparisons, which is great.

This mod seems decent. I definitely love Van Buren largely for it's plot elements and super interesting design documents, although who's to really say how much of that would've actually made it into the final game had it had happened, but I also gotta say I absolutely adore the graphical style Van Buren's tech demo had at least. I really would've loved to have seen the game proper.

The thing is, everyone who created the OG Fallout and was passionate about the project has nothing to do with the Fallouts Bethesda does. Different head company, different developers, different expectations and different philosophy. I daresay they don't even respect the franchise over at Bethesda. It's better to follow the people who made Fallout, like InXile Entertainment (Brian Fargo at the helm) who did a great job on Wasteland 2 and presumably 3 after a less-than-ideal release.

I've been disappointed since Fallout 4 with how bright and flashy the wasteland has become. Fallout 76 is like 25 years after the bombs fell, the world should be ravaged, but it's bright and beautiful. Makes no sense. The old Fallout games make the Wasteland literally look like a nuclear apocalypse world.

The "Enclave floor decoration", while clearly a reused asset, would fit the location quite a lot with some ad hoc touches since most of the government-funded, pre-war corporations of Fallout take names and iconography from greek mythology, the prison included.

You were never really intended to keep 1000s of caps all at once. The idea was always that you would be bartering and exchanging items as your main form of currency, and the caps were something of a "sweetener" or "cherry on top" kind of thing to help facilitate the trade.

Like, I've got 10 Nuka Colas and want to trade them for 2 stim-paks... but you feel that those stim packs are worth 12 nuka colas. I only have the ten nuka colas that I could find in that old building so how about 10 nuka colas and 20 caps? Deal!

But it being an RPG, caps sort of became like gold coins from other fantasy RPGs. I'd kind of like to see RPG economies toned down some, it is often just comical how much currency one can carry about...

@Shia Lebeouf: Life Coach That’s why when I play 3 and NV now I sell suitable goods to suitable merchants - especially after playing Outer Worlds as they have that same system in the game.

In my play through on NV now I decided to do a hardcore run, I’m actually pretty down on caps as usually I have about an average of 40k by the time I’m on the level I’m at (Lvl. 23 I think) but most of the caps I get are spent on repairing my gear and getting myself patched up. I’ve been trying to minimise my cap count as much as possible, even going as far to stash caps in different locations as it would make far more sense for a wasteland wanderer to hide their wealth; rather than carry every single drop of it lol.

Forgot to add that most of the weapons and ammo I get is from trading and I don’t sell spare ammo anymore, I convert all of it into more useful rounds or just break them down for parts to make rounds in the future; hardcore has actually been good in teaching me that those reload and work benches are useful as hell.

End game weapons actually cost thousands of caps, so I don't see why a player wouldn't carry such sums of money.
Cap currency is just a ridiculous idea, and it's not just about carrying thousands of caps in your pockets. If goddamn bottle caps exist in enough numbers to be usable as currency why not just use actual pre war money? Not to say that caps are easier to fake and produce illegally than actual coins or banknotes.

Yeah but then you get into realism for the sake of realism and you have to ask yourself, is this fun? Does this add anything to the experience? The reality is "immersive" systems hinder experiences, it's a novelty the first couple of times but navigating them while just wanting to get back to the actual game is annoying and intrusive. Trading already sort of works like that anyway, paying money and having whatever extra items you don't need to add to the overall trade value.

@@OryxAU it's more fun. I modded my NV recently to give everything weight and lower carry capacity, and trading has been more involved and more exciting. I've been building weapon repair kits, repairing high value items (like Assault Carbines) and then using them as barter for the ammo I need (explosives, so 40mm is expensive). It's more fun to me because I can picture in my imagination the deal, rather than seeing it as buying something off Amazon using a money value

31:40 This hurts. If you think the classic Fallout modding scene is a mess, you should check out how bad Fallout 13 is on the BYOND engine. FO13 has fractured into many different little projects, all of which have ended poorly since it's almost impossible to find someone who both knows how to competently code in BYOND and isn't a complete lunatic. All that really stands out from the ashes are sprites, some of which came from me since I got my start in spriting on Wasteland 13. Lot of unfulfilled dreams there.

@hm The golden age is definitely long gone, but that pertains to SS13 in general honestly. I assume the old guard either burned out or got banned eventually.

Personally, I don't like how S1 is the only server that people really play on now. Back then, S2 was for snobs while S1 felt like the Wild West. Both had a healthy population most of the time, so you could mingle with whichever group you preferred. Now everyone's stuck in the same cesspool. I also don't like a lot of the gameplay changes that have been made lately but that's just me.

I was hoping Randy would start with a clean slate for his next project, SCORCHER, but it seems like he wants to limit access to it once again. Oh well.

@D4n0w4r Honestly, Lifeweb would be way, way, fucking better if the community wasn't such a cesspit. I keep getting disappointed by lack of quality in gameplay/roleplay (at least in the Interzone, not certain how it is in RU). Intelligent and friendly people are hard to come by, yet having both traits is thetically what makes such games (and more importantly, _communities_) interesting.

Not to even mention the rampant bigotry and toxicity that culls the interest of most people, interesting or not.

I keep imagining going back to LFWB but it's way more fun in my imagination than actually playing the thing. I've been seriously considering making my own game, independent of the SS13 community/engine, heavily inspired by LFWB's mechanics. Not sure how it will go.

Original Fallout atmosphere was amazing: arid deserts and towns with ambient sounds you will remember forever, prostitution, drugs(not the fun ones), guns, gore, commonplace ugliness of places and people, derelict buildings, militaristic clans, mutated vermin and not nice place to live in in general. The 'new' Fallouts were more like a place to start an interesting adventure not the depressing barren wastelands of the old...

I would disagree. Fallout 2 easily sits behind Fallout 3 in terms of having that barren wasteland atmosphere.

Most locations in Fallout 2 have a decent level of social development. People in Fallout 3 still have issues with getting clean water.

Enclave patrols only occur near Navarro. The game does a good job at directing you to where it wants you to go such that every new location is appropriate to your level. Either you're traveling south deliberately looking for trouble or you really are just wandering aimlessly.

The main questline is apparently finished and there will be a christmas release of the latest version which has it implemented (for patreon subscribers). Side quests are not they're next on the list.

Not sure I'll play it, Tibbets is incredibly tedious to go through so i guess i'll wait for the full release, but it's good to know the project is not dead.

I've always liked how the devs took inspiration from both Van Buren's Tibbets Prison & the EPA area they originally planned to add in Fallout 2 when they made the (relatively speaking) wacky "Old World Blues" DLC for New Vegas!

I think game would look better without Tactics and some other games sprites, they are not bad, but feel really out of place. 1.5 and Nevada rely on models from F2 and it didn't hurt them at all.

Did I see the NCR character at 21:53 making reference to his "dharma"? I think that's the first time I've seen a developer (or fan) acknowledge Fallout 1's thread of inspiration of having Shady Sands/the NCR take after Vedic society, not counting the way that the terms "Brahmin" and "karma" have just become Important Brand Iconography™ in Bethesda's games.

Wow, I remember hearing about a fallout 3 on this engine, decades ago. Van buren. Back in the 56k days when there were only forums, info was like little nuggets of gold.

I have no idea how many times ive re-played fallout 2 with different character configurations but it must be in the high double digits and i still usually discover something new.

Unrelated to this game but related to Fallout: New Vegas: Joshua Graham to me is one of the best post-Todd Fallout characters. The way he sounds, the way he speaks his beliefs really left an impression on me as a child. Eventually it led me back to the old Fallouts. I'm glad it turned out that way.

As someone who is new to PC gaming but enjoys classical games like this, I cannot help but wish that Interplay/obsidian were still in charge of the Fallout franchise and made all the successive games.

Interplay were no longer good custodians, look at Brotherhood of Steel (they were planning a sequel, too!). Maybe if Obsidian had kept the New Vegas team together, and worked on another Fallout, we would've got another banger, but honestly these games were the product of the right people working together at the right time.. nothing stays gold forever. People get bored, they move on, development cycles and intense and all-consuming. As much as I don't like Fallout 4 and 76, Fallout genuinely could be in worse hands.

The traits screen is interesting, since most of the options are drawn from two pretty unusual sources. Alot look like they're from Arcanum, like Highwayman Background (called Bandit in Arcanum). Others seem to come from Fallout: A GURPS Post-Nuclear Adventure, a version of Fallout 1 back when it was still based on GURPS. A page on the fallout wiki lists alot of info about this version, including the list of advantages and disadvantages some of which show up here as traits.

Im surprised I never played it when it came out. I was in the navy. I played C&C, SimCity, all the Civs. Starcraft, AOE.... I did install a virtualbox on my linux machine and played fallout 1 for the first time about a year before this video was made. I was impressed and after I beat it I played 2 and went back for one again....I remember one of the games had a glitch in it that I had to look up to beat it....I think It was 2....but still awesome games

Great video. I don't really agree with Peragus in Kotor 2 though. I mean, it's isolated, long and quite empty, but it's a good claustrophobic/survival experience.

I admit I have yet to even play vanilla old school Fallout, but it is fun watching videos like this anyways. I guess you can say I have a lack of drive to do anything outside of what I need to sadly.

I recently played fallout BOS for the Xbox, and really enjoyed it. I had never even heard of it back then. I also tried to re-play the original Elder Scrolls and it was completely broken. (On steam, my old pc only shoots dust when I turn it on lol)

I often think that the legs of the power armors in the classic Fallout games look a lot like metallic pants. Like football player pants, but made of shiny metal fabric. It is the way it shows off the booty like football pants, and the way it makes the hips and legs thicker looking like football players.

God bless the programmer who released the source code to the first two Fallout games onto the internet. That way it gave the moders (also God bless ‘em) to keep this beloved franchise alive for decades now.👍👌🏻😃❤🥰😍

I am endlessly baffled by how just how many total conversion mods there are for Fallout 1 & 2 despite, as you say, the total lack of documentation, tools, or help with scripting. People are really really passionate about these games, and yet, I just can't get through them myself! I can play balder's gate and icewind dale with no problem, but i just bounce off of old fallout like a tennis ball. So, thank you for your service, exploring these old games and mods that I will definately never play myself.

I always found the idea that "RPGs were too complex for console gamers" given JRPGs, while niche outside of Final Fantasy, had a dedicated following and many of them had just as many obtuse mechanics and at least in America served as an introduction to RPGs in general. I mean, personally, it it wasn't for falling in love with fantasy games because of Final Fantasy IV (or II when I played it on the SNES), I probably wouldn't have ever played Fallout 2 and Baldur's Gate I on PC.

I love to see people trying to make Van Buren something real. But even after a quick peek at the documents, it's easy to see how big the scope is, and how troublesome a "fan based" development could become. Fast. So double power to anyone who's courageous enough to tackle it. Even if the results are a bit of hit or miss.
In a not noteworthy way, I'm responsible for the name change in the New Vegas project. First, they went with Van Buren, but changed it to Revelation Blue after I discovered that the name "Van Buren" is a registered property of Brian Fargo and Chris Avellone.
I even tried to convince them to down-scale the scope, to make it a more focused project, and not try to go the New California or Frontier route, but... ok, I guess it's their goal to build something massive. I wish them the best, they have talented people on board, like the creator of New Vegas Randomizer. She is trully gifted for coding and scripting

And I think you went on a rant for the sake of it. Read and understand.
Instead of trying to patronize, take a look at the toll a 7-8 (and some times more) years fan based project leaves on some of the people involved. I love the modding community, and I have been blown out of my mind with a lot of what they've done over the years. And then I have seen what "huge" projects tend to do with some of the people involved... modders unhappy, stressed, streched out, jumping off projects lashing out at former team mates, creating animosities out of pure tiredness... Modding is an act of love and dedication, not a job. I love to see what modders can do, what they can create with their love and dedication. If the existence of just 1 mod you named, created a bad situation for 1 modder (hence a human being) ... well, I hope for that mod to burn

I wish there was a Fallout 3 in the old original engine. I grew up with an Amstrad and an Amiga, but 2 games defined gaming for me, Doom on the PSX (the atmosphere due to the creepy soundtrack) and Fallout 1 & 2 (again the atmosphere via the soundtrack). Both Games up there on the top of gaming for me.

The first 2 fallouts and then fallout tactics were the best part of the series and have remained my favorites. Really dont like what they have done with the franchise since those days. So much lost potential over the years. The industry as a whole is a huge letdown these days.
