The band was formed when the couple Mari and Tor Egil Kreken decided that the best way to get to spend some quality time together, was to create a common band project. They asked musical soul mate and guitar player extraordinaire Kjetil Steensnæs to join them, and Darling West was complete.
They all spent their formative years working as session musicians for other artists, but something magical happens when the three of them get together as Darling West. Writing their own songs, they create music that resonates equally well on the crowded streets of Nashville, the sunny mountaintops of Hollywood Hills and in the rainy valleys of Norway.
When asked to name musicians they’re inspired by, the band cites legends such as Emmylou Harris, Doc Watson, Gram Parsons, John Prine and Townes Van Zandt, but also current artists Gillian Welch, Kacey Musgraves, Ryan Adams, Sam Outlaw and Jason Isbell.
In 2014 the group released their first album, Winter Passing, which was nominated for “Country Album of the Year” at the Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy Awards). Their second album “Vinyl and a Heartache” was released in 2016.
Someone Like You
Darling West Lyrics

When you said I'm here to stay
Back when we wrote in stone
Had no place to call our home
Home – no place to call our home
I remember restless nights
Looking for something true
To find a road that fit our shoes
A road – a road that fit our shoes
Thinking of a winter when
All I wanted was to find a friend
Back then I never knew
I would find someone like you
You – find someone like you
The lyrics of Someone Like You by Darling West refer to the memories and experiences of the singer(s) with a person they fell in love with, who they identify as "you". They recall the moment when "you" said that they were here to stay, which gave them a sense of stability and commitment, even though they did not have a physical home yet. The idea of home as a place of belonging and comfort is highlighted throughout the song, and the lack of it in the beginning of the relationship symbolizes the uncertainty and wandering that characterized their lives at that time.
The lyrics also mention the challenges and struggles that the singer(s) faced in their search for a meaningful life. They had many restless nights and were looking for something true that would fit their path, but it was not easy to find. The metaphor of finding a road that fit their shoes suggests that they were looking for a way of life that would match their personality and values. The reference to winter and the desire to find a friend suggest that they were feeling isolated and lonely before meeting "you", who became the missing piece in their puzzle. The chorus emphasizes the importance of finding someone like "you", who completed them and made them feel at home.
Overall, the song conveys a sense of nostalgia and gratitude for the love that transformed the singer(s) life. It nostalgically relives the experience of finding true love and belonging, and it is an ode to the person who provided that feeling. It implies that the journey of finding oneself and finding a home is not always easy, but it can be rewarding when one finds the right person to walk alongside.
