Hi Edia. Quite fond of this mix, myself. Sorry in advance for being THAT guy, but I just had to this time...LOL. Recently, I've found myself defending comments I've made by using "wow" as a noun. "Wow and flutter," to be more precise. Many seem to think it can't be a noun at all. It certainly can, albeit less common. In regards to audio (not verbal, or written), it can be used to describe pitch variation sequences on an analog recording. "Wow and flutter," together, are used as a relatively common expression at times. Wow is usually somewhat slow, or gradual; whereas "flutter" is used to describe a higher rate of the same variance (usually w/ tape).
People didn't know what I was talking about in the comment section here on YouTube (there were a few old house tracks that people were convinced had been produced that way). That isn't true, however. I wrongly assumed most would understand my reference, forgetting that English isn't everyone's first language. In audio recordings, "wow" is usually a result of the vinyl or tape itself; often resulting from an off-center pressing. Same thing can happen when a record gets warped. Sometimes it's the actual playback device itself, that may cause wow or flutter (more common on machines that play tape). In any case, I'm assuming you weren't using "wow" in that way. ; )
"Wow," by itself is an informal interjection, not an adverb. If remarked with different punctuation, it would likely be an 'exclamation' (the corollary is usually referenced as such for English students), even though it's kind of redundant. It's more just to reflect the intonation. If this particular mix did wow you; it would be a transitive verb (requiring one or more objects, depending on context). You could have just been using this as background music for your World of Warcraft adventures, but that didn't seem likely either. While exalted, you may have said "Wow, finally!".....but, in your in excitement; you actually forgot the adverb part altogether. (I prefer to believe that's what happened here). ; ) OR, maybe you were referencing the comment that preceded yours?
If the mix was an absolute wow; it'd be a noun, obviously. If the mix contained "wow;" it would also be important to clarify the context. "Those TRAXX records have the usual wow factor." I could be alluding to the records on that label being horribly pressed; often out of old recycled vinyl, and quite possibly, stale cheeseburgers. It may not necessarily mean that they awe me, and make my heart flutter. I do like a majority of the tracks though. ; )
Since "wow factor" is a wildly used slang expression (as wow isn't an adjective - so it's considered a noun containing two words). That kind of indolence bugs the shit out of me, because of how vast (and apt) other words are within this language. It's just assumed we wouldn't ever use "factor" saddled to "wow" when describing an unintended pitch variance. Surely, such an intentionally clever statement could be made, jokingly amongst audiophiles or sound engineers.....only because it just sounds so dumbed down as an expression.
It's kind of bordering on a neologism, or malapropism; but if one is too lazy to even bother creating a new word (or using any number of the adaptable existing words); it really bothers me when such an expression becomes accepted. LOL. Especially since it really should mean what it already is: (the exponential rate of pitch variance). Never mind, that "wow factor" is an incredibly apathetic (and lame) way of describing anything. I'd rather have a word like wowlessness.
It also really grosses me out when people say, "he/she has that "it" factor." Eww. On those talent shows, for example. Then they'll say, "just sayin" as a verbal shrug for no apparent reason...even though they're the one who just went out of their way to offer an opinion; because that's their fucking job as a judge. Yuck. No conviction in any of that, and it's just a way of not being accountable for the thing you just said. I'm NOT saying the use of "wow" on its own, is lazy or lame. I use it casually all the time. ; ) More so as a sarcastically dry response to something underwhelmingly unimpressive.
I hope that wasn't too annoying. I really did think you might actually appreciate the verbose explanation; mostly due to how expressive you were in your comment, and the thoughtful sentiment (even if erroneously assigning a part of speech / syntactic function to WOW). Regardless of all that, I'm curious why you found this process challenging. Did you not know where to look for the quality shit from back in the day? Since you've been wowed a few times in one day, I'm assuming you finally got some good related suggestions popping up now? Hope all is well, and you're getting your musical tastes gratified. I know your comment was from a year ago, so hopefully you're good now. Happy to assist if you hit another quality techno drought.
