Horses
Daryl Braithwaite Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Where the cold wind blows
Or in the sun laughing having fun
With the people that she knows
And if the situation should keep us separated
You know the world won't fall apart
And you will free the beautiful bird
That's caught inside your heart
Oh, she cries so loud
Casts her wild note over water and cloud
That's the way it's gonna be, little darlin'
We'll be riding on the horses, yeah
Way up in the sky, little darlin'
And if you fall I'll pick you up, pick you up
You will grow and until you go
I'll be right there by your side
And even then whisper the wind
And she will carry up your ride
I hear all the people of the world
In one bird's lonely cry
See them trying every way they know how
To make their spirit fly
Can't you see him?
He's down on the ground
He has a broken wing looking all around
That's the way it's gonna be, little darlin'
You go riding on the horses, yeah
Way up in the sky, little darlin'
And if you fall I'll pick you up, pick you up
That's the way it's gonna be, little darlin'
You go riding on the horses, yeah
Way up in the sky, little darlin'
And if you fall I'll pick you up, pick you up
That's the way it's gonna be, little darlin'
You go riding on the horses, yeah
Way up in the sky, little darlin'
And if you fall I'll pick you up, pick you up
That's the way it's gonna be, little darlin'
You go riding on the horses, yeah
Way up in the sky, little darlin'
And if you fall I'll pick you up, pick you up
That's the way it's gonna be, little darlin'
You go riding on the horses, yeah
Way up in the sky, little darlin'
And if you fall I'll pick you up, pick you up
The lyrics to Daryl Braithwaite's song "Horses" are about the power of love and being there for someone through all of life's ups and downs. The song talks about flying high, either in the cold wind or in the sun, surrounded by the people we love. The lyrics also touch on the idea that sometimes we may need to be apart from the ones we hold dear, but love can conquer all. The metaphor of the beautiful bird that's trapped in our hearts represents the feeling of being held back by our fears and doubts, but ultimately breaking free with the help of those who love us.
The chorus of the song repeats the words "That's the way it's gonna be, little darlin'" multiple times, reinforcing the idea that no matter what happens, the singer will always be there for the person they are singing to. The metaphor of riding on horses, way up in the sky, represents the idea of soaring to great heights with the support of those we love. The final lines of the song talk about how we are all trying to make our spirits fly in our own ways, but with the help of others, we can soar higher than we ever thought possible.
Overall, the lyrics to "Horses" are about the power of love, support, and the importance of being there for one another through all of life's challenges.

I, a Canadian was in Australia on a working holiday, Brisbane on a Saturday afternoon at the Eaglefarm race course. This song came on and all the Aussies sang and danced to it. It was the first time that I heard it and I pretended to sing along and man did I dance. Judging by everyone’s reaction to it, I knew it was important.
Now when I hear it, a montage of all the wonderful memories I made in Australia plays in my mind. What a beautiful nation, the lucky country indeed. Much love to all of you Aussies, enjoy your beautiful country and never stop being loud, boisterous and awesome. Cheers!

RIP Margaret Urlich. The great Kiwi singer who sang with Daryl on this classic song. Both Daryl and Margaret did a wonderful duet.
