Retreat
Datsik Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life
Our very freedom came under attack
In a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts
The victims were in airplanes, or in their offices
Secretaries, businessmen and women
Military and federal workers
Mums and dads, friends and neighbours
Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror
The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings
Fires burning, huge, huge structures collapsing
Have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness
And a quiet, unyielding anger
These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat

The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings
Fires burning, huge structures collapsing
Have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness
And a quiet, unyielding anger
These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat

Chaos and retreat

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Datsik's song Retreat begin with a sample of former US President George W. Bush's speech following the September 11th terrorist attacks. The opening lines refer to the attacks as deliberate and deadly terrorist acts that attacked the freedom and way of life of citizens. The victims were from all walks of life, including secretaries, businessmen, military and federal workers, parents and friends, all of whom had their lives suddenly ended by the evil and despicable acts of terror.

The lyrics then continue by reiterating the disbelief, sadness, and anger that the nation felt as a result of the attacks. The destruction of the World Trade Center, as well as the images of airplanes flying into buildings, and the huge structures collapsing, were intended to shock and terrorize the nation into chaos and retreat.

The repeating of the lines about the pictures of airplanes flying into buildings and fires burning, and the mention of the quiet, unyielding anger, drive home the emotional weight that still lingers in American society. The song seems to serve as a tribute to the victims of the attack, and as a symbol of the determination to not give in to the fear that events like 9/11 can create.

Still spinning these OG Datsik tracks,
Find myself coming down here often.

Guilty by nature, nostalgia as well as that familiar chorus bring me back. Have many times.

This playlist is killer, takes me down path of righteousness, of that of what is true Dub.. the nasty, gritty grind and vibes, it’s still easy to tell it’s one of his records

Samples of Bush Speech are haunting as they forever will be, here as much as ever.
