Possibly my favorite album.

I bought this album from a guy trying to sell it to the shop I was working for. We couldn't except. I had just heard take five for the first time and was looking to broaden musical taste. This def got me further into jazz.

If I had to depart with but one album to take with me, this would be that album. I'd want it in vinyl, too, with a fine stylus, turntable, and capable audio system. There are likely great planets out there. Dave Brubeck is perhaps managing one of them.

Nomad is for me the best of the musical compositions and cultural impressions returned by the Dave Brubeck Quartet from their 1958 United States Department of State tour of Eurasia. The enormity of the music's diplomatic success stands as testament to an entirely different approach to world relationships extant only sixty years ago. One might ask how those relationships fell to what they are today, and how they might respond to similarly skilled and finessed efforts to return world relationships to less volatile, even stable and peaceful conditions. I was a 13-year old in 1959 when I discovered Brubeck's Jazz Impressions of Eurasia with its beautifully colorful front cover and rich liner notes. It had been released in long-play 33-1/3 RPM format, and this cut, Nomad, had also been released on a single play 45 RPM vinyl recording, the format on which I first heard it. Indeed, this tune was my first hearing of any of Dave Brubeck's music. What I heard was a strange, interesting, even eerie beat attended to with equally mysterious chords full of adventure and intrigue. And, suddenly: Boom! At 0:56 the song took off. The transition struck me like a bolt of something that would disallow me from ever again spinning an Elvis recording. From that chance hearing onward, Dave Brubeck and his Quartet and album liner notes began a curiosity and self-education that continues to this day. As individuals, our tastes and our behaviors are our own choices. They are our individual discoveries of ourselves, our souls. They are ours to direct and to refine. Our world is our choice. One is free to ask: What kinds of reasonable and spiritually generous decisions and solutions can I proffer to cause a more enlightened and Universally-acceptable result in the human condition of today? Some of those answers come from the carefully crafted gentlemen such as Mr. Dave Brubeck. While much is rightfully said regarding Paul Desmond's musical relationship with Brubeck, noteworthy also is the musical sensitivity of bassist Eugene Wright to Brubeck's piano. After listening to this piece for 61 years, I continue to hear Eugene Wright effortlessly hold down 4/4 in walking bass chords with such deceptive elegance. Eugene Wright probably has more influence over my own double bass efforts, modest as they are, than any other bassist. Eugene Wright did his job, never showing off, always holding a steadiness that was eloquent and strong. The man was a giant of capability tempered with humility. Thank-you for reading. May we have peace on Earth. May God please bless us.

Absolutamente maravilloso.

@mpcguy

paul had big ears and probably a near perfect serial memory for musical bits. i would imagine he used all sorts of fragments he heard other great musicians play. it fits his m.o. for improvising which was varied repetition as much as any other approach

Think so? We'll never know now 'cuz you can't ask the Dear Man. RIP ( I bought this album Hot off the press in the '50s.)

@RAJANAWAB

In Jazz Journal, one Alan Siskin noted that Desmond's entrance sounds a l;little like Coltrane and the phrase at 2:14 songs like Dolphy. Train and Dolphy drawing on Demond??
