Milk Cow Blues
Dave Davies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I've tried everything to get along with you
But I'm gonna tell ya what I'm gonna do
I'm sick of all your crying, gonna leave you alone
If you don't believe I'm going
You pack all my things, I'm gone

I'm gonna leave
Gonna leave you lovin' baby for some day[?]
Well if you don't believe I'm going
Watch me leaving you this way

Won't you please, well that sun looks good going down
Won't you please, well that sun looks good going down
But don't that ol' moon look lonesome when your baby's not around

Won't you please, don't that sun look good going down

Won't you please, don't that sun look good going down
But don't that ol' moon look lonesome when your baby's not around

Overall Meaning

The lyrics, "Well I've tried everything to get along with you, But I'm gonna tell ya what I'm gonna do, I'm sick of all your crying, gonna leave you alone, If you don't believe I'm going, You pack all my things, I'm gone," suggest that the singer is done trying to make things work in their relationship with the person they are addressing. The repetition of "I'm gone" emphasizes their determination to leave. The use of the word "crying" may suggest that the person they are leaving is overly emotional or manipulative. The singer is making it clear that they are not going to be swayed by any arguments or begging.

The next stanza, "I'm gonna leave, Gonna leave you lovin' baby for some day[?], Well if you don't believe I'm going, Watch me leaving you this way," further emphasizes that the singer is committed to leaving, but also suggests that they still care for the person they are leaving behind. The phrase "lovin' baby" may suggest that the singer still feels affection for the person, despite their frustration. The repetition of "watch me leaving you this way" again emphasizes the singer's determination to go through with their decision.

The final stanza, "Won't you please, well that sun looks good going down, Won't you please, well that sun looks good going down, But don't that ol' moon look lonesome when your baby's not around," suggests that the singer is reflecting on what they are leaving behind. The use of the word "please" may be ironic, as the singer is not asking for anything but rather making a statement. The imagery of the sun and moon emphasize the passing of time and the feeling of loneliness that can come with being apart from someone you care for.

That's some heavy stuffs for being the mid 60's. Pre Hendrix. The Kinks started the distorted electric guitar sound.

This is probably my favorite musical performance ever.

Elliot Ravencroft

favorite part starts at 2:50. To me sounds way meaner and heavier than a lot of metal bands

Die 1. LP in meiner recht ordentlichen Sammlung. Sie gehört wie AC/DC´s High Voltage heute nach so vielen Jahren noch immer unter die besten 10. Da muss sogar Aerosmith an dieser Cover-Version noch ein wenig üben!
