His first success came with a band, Th' Dudes, which he formed while still in school. Their hit song "Be Mine Tonight" won single of the year in 1979 in New Zealand, while singles "Walking in Light" and "Bliss" became popular anthems.
After Th' Dudes folded, Dobbyn formed pop group DD Smash. The band's first album Cool Bananas debuted in the New Zealand charts at number one. The band's hit singles included "Devil you Know", "Outlook for Thursday", and the violin-tinged "Whaling".
When DD Smash folded, Dobbyn began a successful solo career, by writing the soundtrack music for the animated feature film Footrot Flats: The Dog's Tale in 1986. The film yielded two hit singles: "Oughta Be in Love" and the chart-topping "Slice of Heaven", recorded with the band Herbs. After the release of the film, Slice of Heaven became one of Dobbyn's best-known songs, frequently used in tourism advertisements aired on Australian television that encouraged people to visit New Zealand. As a result, many Australians jokingly referred to the song as the New Zealand National anthem.
At the 2001 New Zealand Music Awards Dobbyn won a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2005 and 2006 he won "Songwriter Of The Year" and "Best Male Solo Artist" respectively, both for his work on his 2005 album Available Light

Hey, I got a lot of faith in you
I'll stick with you kid, that's the bottom line
Yeah, you have a lot of fun don't you
Hey beauty when the mood gets you down
Your bottom lip's near dragging on the ground
That's when I gotta play the clown for you
Black humor made you kick your blues
Howdy angel
Where did you hide your wings?
Her love shines over my horizon, she's a slice of heaven (slice of heaven)
Warm moonlight over my horizon, she's a slice of heaven

The song Slice of Heaven by Dave Dobbyn is an ode to a woman who the singer sees as his slice of heaven. The song begins with a repetitive instrumental which sets the tone for the cheerful and uplifting lyrics that follow. The singer expresses his unwavering faith in the woman he is singing about, promising to stick with her through thick and thin. He acknowledges that she knows how to have fun, and that living with her is a joyous experience. When she's feeling down, he steps up to make her laugh and lift her spirits, using his sense of humor to keep her smiling.
The chorus calls the woman an "angel" and describes her as a slice of heaven. The singer sees her love as something that brightens up his entire world, providing him with warmth and happiness. He likens her to the warmth of the moonlight that shines over his horizon, drawing a comparison between her beauty and the natural wonders of the world. The song ends with another repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the happiness and love that the singer has found with his slice of heaven.
Overall, Slice of Heaven is a catchy, upbeat song that celebrates the joy of love and the beauty of nature.

I’m a Texan that was living in Mount Maunganui when this song came out and just found my signed copy of Footrot Flats the other day! Damn I miss New Zealand and all of the awesome people there!

Australia better. :)
@furiousstylez263
@@beausims5605Don't compare Australia to New Zealand. New Zealanders are more United than Aussies mate. Y'all are all over the place. Australia is New Zealand 30 to 40 years ago. New Zealand has made peace with family violence since ONCE WERE WARRIORS. Aussie news everyday. Woman being beaten, kidnapped, raped etc. It's a daily occurrence in Australia. N.Z far from that now. Mums and families first.
@Will.Flavell
@@furiousstylez263yeah I agree as a Kiwi living Australia I prefer to work with my fellow Kiwis we always get the job done unlike most Aussies want the job done their way which is the wrong way then get hysterical over stupid nonsense which I’m sick of but there’s some good ones which I don’t mind them.

First time when I heard this song I was in some random night club in Auckland. The whole club went nuts. 4 years later now back in Scotland I miss those days of freedom and also the great people in New Zealand.
