Cadillac
Dave and the Army of Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cadillac car, baby it's the best by far

If you wanna have fun and you're not a square type
Come on out with me, we'll go drive tonight
Drop down the windows, turn the radio on
Cruise through the city, like we're really gone

When we go out drivin', let's go down town
Then we cruise and we cruise, we go ridin' around
If you see a pretty girl that looks all right
You can bet your life, you gonna get 'em inside

I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cadillac car, baby it's the best by far
Yeah, rock!

Yeah, rock!

When night's gettin' over and it's time we gotta go
We cruise once around the block, drivin' really slow
Turn the car around and you head on home
When you cruise a Cadillac, you never gonna cruise alone

You can see the people lookin' as you drive on by
It makes you feel real happy, don't you know just why?
Everywhere you go, you're just a real cool cat
Drivin' and cruisin' in your Cadillac

I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cad', I got a Cad', I got a Cadillac car
I got a Cadillac car, baby it's the best by far
Yeah, rock! Yeah Cadillac car!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dave and the Army of Brown's song "Cadillac" speak to the feeling of being alone and isolated, with a sense of finality that is both tragic and romantic. The haunting repetition of "night wolves moan" and "the winter hills are black" creates an atmosphere of desolation and loss, setting the stage for a journey that is both physical and emotional. The singer of the song, who seems to be the only passenger in the titular car, is taking a final ride that will never bring them back. The final lines of the song - "It's my last ride, I'm never coming back" - emphasize the sense of finality and closure that the singer is seeking.

The song touches on themes such as regret, loss, and acceptance. The singer of the song acknowledges that sometimes they blame themselves for their situation, but other times they blame external forces such as money or women. The repeated use of the phrase "long white Cadillac" takes on a mythic quality, becoming a symbol of the journey that the singer is taking and the sense of release that they hope to find at the end of it.

How I do understand.
This song reminds me so much of my Dad.
He was a working class blue collar guy who never had a lot of fancy things, and knew what really mattered.
Everything he did in this life, he did for me and my Mom.
I was their only child, and while they weren’t at all rich, they never denied me anything affordable.
But in everything they bought for me over the years, none of it means anything in what they gave me in love, learning, family bonding, and knowing God.
I lost them both five years ago, within six months of each other and miss them everyday, but I will forever value the legacy they gave me, and anticipate the day we are together again.
Love and miss you Mom and Dad.
I’ll give the girls a kiss from Mimi and Papa.❤️

You have to remember music is kind of like region in a way it can reach deep in to the heart we hope, dreams, love and fear live were some say Angles fear to tread
it can mean so much to so many but not all ways the same meaning at times

Country like rock & Roll, folk or protest songs like come out ye Black & Tans which was born out of the deaths of hell from those who live through it on both sides

Music is to the ears like a good runing engine or art to the eyes or a good meal to the nose and mouth from its taste.

The US like all nations have changed so much and will never stop changing and good music like good food & people come in all nations, walks of life from dirt poor street people to what some call Blue Bloods

May music like good people, food and days never leave this world for it would be a darker place without it. and those to come would have no hope of love, trust and dreams could die a slow death

We owe so much to those of the past from Cold miners to vets and a police officer as well to mothers & fathers who have done their best t make the world a better place

Music like life can be looked at in many ways

as they say this song to me like so may has roots deep in history and life with words of wisdom for all to see and learn from

Hearing this song when your dad is gone is a whole different level of understanding, everything he ever told me was true. Once your Daddy is gone, life is never the same.

I understand how you feel, my dad left us in 2012 and my grandfather left us in 2019 and there's not a day that goes by that I don't miss them and when I listen to this song it brings me back to the lessons they taught me. Granted I may only have just turned 26 but this is the generation of country music is was raised on.

Hello 👋

@amandamartin2382

I lost my dad today. I remember listening to this on the radio when it was released. He never could afford a Cadillac but he spent his life working on other folks cars. I went underground to be able to buy my own Cadillac and when I finally did I was so proud of it. I’d gladly trade it for just a second with him to apologize for all my foolishness. Nothing in this world is as precious as time folks, nothing!
